I'm a high schooler looking to buy my first electric guitar, and I'm having trouble deciding which route to go. I have a decent acoustic, and I plan to keep playing it, but the kind of music I listen to (Radiohead, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Sublime, Pink FLoyd, all kinds of stuff) makes me want to try an electric. Im taking lessons and have ben playing for about 3 months. I know that isn't long but I'm progessing really fast. The problem is I don't have too much money (maybe $200-$300) for a guitar, amp, etc. If I get a real cheap guitar that I trash after a year I'm back where I started down 300 bucks. I could probably buy a cheap used practice amp for about $ 30 (I just need to get playing). Is it a good idea to get a good-condition name brand guitar from ebay or should I stick with a music store's lower ends? Any opinions? Sorry bout droning on.Thanks
hmm i have heard of some good lower end guitars that are cheap, i think it was samick and peavey where the brand i'd be going for :D for my my first electric i got a J&D luthiers you may never heard of them but they are real good guitar, good weight and tone, a bit of feedback and the guitar was alittle small but it had a great neck.

For $200 to 300, you should be able to get some decent equipment. There were a couple of recent threads about this very same subject. Check them out for some ideas. Be careful about buying a used guitar online though. I would be really reluctant to buy a used guitar without having an opportunity to play it first.

Don't go through Ebay. My opinion is that you don't really know what you are buying. Go to a music store and buy the lower end if you wish. Or perhaps a pawn shop or second hand store will have what you are looking for. The point is, that you will be able to see if the guitar has a warped neck...scratches and so on....
Hope it helps.
