Positions

What are positions? What are the "proper" positions or at least easiest postitions to follow? I have an idea of what they are but i hear open positions, closed positions, first positions, second position etc. Can you help clear up the confusion?

position simply mean which fret your first finger lays on while playing.
If you are working off scales with first finger based on the fifth fret, you are in 5th position.
