This could probably just as easily go under the "Tone" section but I thought it was more Gear related.

I am looking for a guitar/amp setup that will result in a very dirty, noisy, gritty sound. A bit messy, but controlled. Something similar to The White Stripes or Queens of The Stone Age. Not sure where to start. (I'm more used to playing cleaner sound. If anyone has any gear suggestions as far as guitar or amps go please fill me in.

I think the key is that he doesn't dwell in overly fancy amps and pedals. A Fender Twin and some stomp boxes. Granted, a Twin will set you back a nice bankroll but I think you could do pretty good with even a Fender Frontman 2x12, a compression pedal and a Tube Screamer and spend well under $500.
