How do you know the order of half steps and whole steps on a guitar? On the piano it is lined up. On the guitar it seems confusing. From b to c and e to f are half steps. But to do chords how do you place your fingers to get the root and all that follow with half steps?

Good observation. This is because the guitar has no obvious physical, perceptual difference between natural and accidental notes. It's all just a "different fret". Whereas the piano does have the obvious physical, perceptual difference between natural and accidental notes by means of black and white keys.
