- if not, never mind :)

- please narrow the list (5 max), or I'll need the whole eternity to make a list :)

This song looks like, little unserious job to me, is he involved with some bigger projects?

lalimacefolle
01-07-2002, 02:41 PM
Yes. He has written theme songs for MTV, CNN, and SEGA, among others... Is that considered serious?
Oh yeah, and he was voted 8th best guitarist (as I can remember)in the world in some japanese mag... Oh yeah, and also , John Petrucci and Steve VAI are fans...
He is also the man behind bumblefoot... And he is pretty much insane (what you can hear there is what he does that sounds closest to a song)

Just looked at the voting on http://www.stormbringer.1444.net/

... this is a joke, isnt it?

Blackmoore on 1 while peeps like Beck and Petrucci are elsewhere??

Oh man - i wonder if those who voted have ever realy closely listened to all those guitarists - i bet the voting would have ended in a different way - however - just IMHO

-=[Azrael]=-

Ps: and the greatest joke is, that Keith Richards is on that page at all *LMFDAO!!*

Branislav
01-08-2002, 10:37 AM
The list is formed depending on votes, not on my opinion, so Blackmore's first because he won most votes (for now).
If you don't like him, that doesnt' have to mean he's not good. The situation for Keith is the same. I think he is ranget too high, too, but I don't mind.
If you want to change something, try with voting.

The best metal guitarist right now, in my humble opinion, is Jeff Loomis of Nevermore. He can do everything, and do it very, very well.

For a great primer, listen to these Nevermore tunes:
- Seven Tongues of God
- Inside For Walls
- Engines of Hate
- Narcosynthesis
- Fault of the Flesh

Here's a Link to his picture:

what would qualify a guitarist to be on the list, his technique? i bet there are many unknown guys that can play faster and cleaner than most of the shredders but they will never get a record deal, you know that image counts today.
So i guess that creativity is what counts the most.
I would say that Vai and Hendrix are among the best players
not because of their techniques but because of their musical skills.

Branislav

I never said that faster guitarist is the better one.
Hendrix is slower that the half guitarists from that list and he is better too. Creativity and style are the most impotant to me, and I put on the list anyone "more-less" famous I find picture for, but not depending on my taste, because I don't like at least third guitarists there, but I still have them.

Yes, I agree. A best Guitarists Poll is no place for people who play chords. I mean I heard a Stones song once and they were playing chords all the way and listen to this, there was no 18bps guitar solo. I mean ho do people listen to that. Everyone knows only wankin-lead guitarists are any good.

By the way I was being sarcastic.

Branislav
01-10-2002, 06:01 PM
I agree with that, but only particulary.
At one side, they suck (Neil Young and Richards) but at the other side, people voted for them.

Okay, people...I cannot believe what I am hearing!

First, let me clear up what I personally believe makes a guitarist better than another. The guitarist has to have a number of things. Technique helps, but it's not the most important. Style isn't a big thing(it can even hurt guitarists sometimes). Speed is good, but unless they can pull it off smoothly, speed doesn't mean dick. Their image is actually quite important. It takes a bit of skill to play a guitar good, but it takes a LOT of MIND to be able to make people think you are attached to that guitar when you squeeze off a beautiful solo. I mean, look at Hendrix...you could SEE his entire BODY playing the guitar, not just his fingers. The most important thing, though, is sound. They have to have an effect that compliments the solo, a solo that matches the song, an actual FEELING in the sound, and a sound that's not cluttered in finger-tapping metal distortion.

Well, now that I have that aside, I would like to claim my votes. These votes are very important...SO PAY ATTENTION!

1. Yngwie Malmsteen (any arguments??? didn't think so)
2. Kirk Hammett...who could dislike this guy?
3. Slash...very, very beautiful stuff
4. Dimebag Darrell...has anybody in Guitartricks.com heard this guy?...he's incredible!
5. A tie with Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Jimi Hendrix

TimE.

Okay, now I have to make comments on everybody (sorry, it's in my blood).

Lalimacelolla(or whatever) - I have got to hear some of your stuff. Everywhere I go on this website, I see you. I'm gonna have to check up on you. Where is some music of yours I can download? Then, maybe I'll vote for you.

Now, someone mentioned Axl Rose...CAN HE EVEN PLAY THE GUITAR?!!!! He's the SINGER for G'nR.

I agree that you all shouldn't vote for yourselves. I mean, I believe that I'm really good too...but there's a factor you are overlooking. If you are good enough to be on a "Best Guitarist" list...than you should have record deals out the butt, fans out the butt, and you should be in every guitar magazine. If you aren't...apparently SOMEBODY doesn't like SOMETHING about your playing.

I wish I could've saw that pic of "Mick Jagger/ Keith Richards." You all sound pretty sure of yourselves that it's one or the other.

WHY DIDN'T ANYONE MENTION YNGWIE MALMSTEEN IN HERE?! Is he not one of the greatests? He can play fast or slow from the bottom of the neck to the top without blurring ANY of the notes. Please, everyone comment...

If you want that pic I can sand it to ya :)

About Yngwie.
Don't get angry, but I hate him, because he has nohing bat the speed, but on the other side I was the first who added him on the list because I know there are people who like that style, and he is one of the most famous now.

1)Slash
2)Slash
3)Slash

Branislav

mrcrowley
01-11-2002, 10:15 AM
Hey,

When will I see a vote for Jeff Loomis?

I'll plug Nevermore once again. Nevermore's album "Dead Heart in a Dead World" is ESSENTIAL for any metal fan's collection.

Nevermore's guitarist Jeff Loomis is the best there is. He shreds faster than Yngwie or Jason Becker, he employs pinch harmonics better than Dimebag or Zakk Wylde, and he sweeps faster than anyone I've ever heard.

Essential Nevermore tunes:
"Seven Tongues of God"
"Engines of Hate"
"Fault of the Flesh"
"Inside four Walls"
"The River Dragon"

Buy these tunes or download them, or whatever, and enjoy!!!

- Crowley

Let's proceed in two times.

First: Did you check my music? If so, do you vote for me?
(by the way, I'm 'la limace folle', which in french means the crazy snail, don't ask me, I don't know why either...)

Second: I don't think that nowadays, great guitarists/musicians necessarily mean record deal and fans. Even in guitar magazines. I think that they put someone that will make their mag sell better on their cover (otherwise, why would we have Jimi HENDRIX's picture every other issue? Maybe he's the best ever, but he's dead for 25 years, talk about news!!) Allan HOLDSWORTH doesn't get the attention he deserves, and the guy is ACTUALLY thinking about having a day job... Who is he? Well, he's the only guitarist who made Van Halen go "huh, how did he do that". And he has shaped the way we hear modern jazz more than anybody. Ok, Steve VAI and Satch are great, but gosh, everything that comes out of their studios doesn't sound fresh like it did before. Don't misunderstand me, I admire their work and everything, but they sometimes sound like they have to sketch themselves not to disappoint fans.

I've seen people who had as much talent and chops than any player I have ever seen earning millions and playing in stadiums. It wasn't their attitude, or their marketability, or that they didn't have songs that could fit on the radio. It was just that they didn't have any luck... Or that they weren't in the right place at the right time...

Keith RICHARDS has influenced more guitarists than Paul GILBERT for example. Of course his chops don't show as much as Paul's, but I think he has a style on his own, that allows him to be in this poll...

01-13-2002, 05:32 PM
I would agree that we're heading in the wrong direction. Attacking each others choices with insults doesn't add anyone to the list. I know there are more "great" guitarists that aren't on the list. And who is defining great?

Branislav
01-13-2002, 06:30 PM
Yeah, you're right.
Everyone of us has different taste, so insulting and attacking others because they like something is stupid.

I know there are not all great guitarists on my list, but I'm not superman, I can't find all of them for that short time :)
If you want to see your favorite guitarist there, please help me by finding his photo on the web.

I know that maybe someone on the list doesn't deserve to be there or to be ranked higher than someone else, but that's people's will :) and I advocate it

thanx

cmon people this guy has got to be one of THE most original guitar players out there. give him the credit he deserves... he developed his own style that is not even remotely like anything anyone has ever heard before, and it sounds awesome. lets just hope chris cornell doesnt ruin the great band that was Rage Against the Machine!

is anyone with me on this or am i all by myself here?

i think i put too many people on my vote list anyways, but as long as you put me down for kirk hammet/joe satriani/tom morello ill be happy, k thx

I don't know about that. Chris Cornell is a great guitarist and songwriter and he helped make Soundgarden into a fantastic band. The RATM/Chris Cornell collaboration, as I hear, has no intention of sounding anything like RATM or Soundgarden. A spokesperson for RATM said they're heading in a completely new sonic direction. Pretty exciting, eh?

In no particular order:

Joe Satriani - modern day fountain of wisdom
Dimebag - king of brain strain pyrotechnics
Michael Hedges - master and leader of the acoustic genre
Yngwie J. Malmsteen - even still today!
Randy Rhoads - no words can say enough
Jimi Hendrix - same group as Rhoads
Steve Vai - chops galore!
Paul Gilbert - chops for days!
Eric Johnson - pantatonic actually sounds like THAT?
Zakk Wylde - Chunky Les Paul thunder!

This is my rough list of top ten guitarists. Mind you, it changes from week to week. (NOTE: Eddie was note included but he would fit into my top 20 list.)

Dimebag Darrel is from the band Pantera. I dunno who the other chap is

OmegaMonster

Michael Hedges was a very tasteful guitarist. He played mainly acoustic fingerstyle guitar and was very lyrical in his music. He played mainly instrumental music although he did sing a few songs (about as well as Satriani did on "Flying in a Blue Dream"). His first album was "Breakfast in the Field"...I tell you this guy is classic. Search the internet for him and I'm sure you'll find some info on him. Unfortunately he passed away a few years back before the majority of the guitar world ever got a chance to hear him. I would suggest giving it a listen.

As far as Dimebag...Pantera...chops monster...a severe lack of musical theory does not restrict his playing. In fact, it only frees his music up because of the lack of theoretical boundries. A true riff master!

3. Trey Azagthoth
4. John Schaffer
5. Dave Mustain
6. Jimi Hendrix

Seriously, Malmsteen is far too repetative in his playing and so is Hammett. Malmsteen is good but he's stuck in harmonic minor with no way out except blues and occasionally flamenco which is pretty much harmonic minor some more for him...which gets old fast...and Hammett does pretty much the same with really basic runs in the 12th and , tapping, sweeping etc...
In Both Cases it may sound good, musically it's boring.

Well, I'd say that if music sounds good it IS good. I mean, what's the point of being the World's greatest guitarist and have the best and most complex solos in the whole World but your music is no good?

And Hendrix? Hmmm, okay, he might have been a great guitarist (though personally I don't recall one of his songs I'd like) but I heard a funny story about him yesterday. Someone told me he was watching a documentary on Hendrix years ago while he was still living with his parents (probably like over 10 years ago), probably too loud... his mom came to his room and said "turn the vacuum cleaner off, will you?"

I have an idea.

Someone please make a new thread named "Best Guitarists top list 2." These 11 pages are starting to scare me. I think we need to start over.

I would like to comment on Yngwie Malmsteen again. After researching him and his work and such...yeah, he sucks. Well, he doesn't suck. Just too overrated. Like Eddie Van Halen. I strongly disagree that Kirk Hammett is like either of them, though.

Whoever said that Hammett is too repetitive, I must complain. He is a bit simple...but you have to LISTEN to it. Don't concentrate on recreating it. These are the "Best Guitarists." Not the "Guitarists that YOU can't play faster/better than."

Later all,

Branislav
02-06-2002, 06:31 AM
I don't think that speed is important.
I don't think I can play better than Blackmore or Page either, but I think they are the best!
First, appologize for Malmsteen lovers :), but
Malmsteen is just uncreative, and he tries to cover it by playing evrything very fast. I think it's stupid. Blackmore says in his 10 notes more than Malmsteen in whis whole album.

See ya
