While just picking around on the guitar, as I do alot while watching TV, I picked out something that sounded familiar to me. The more I repeated it, the more I felt like I had heard it and now I am sure that it is a song but I can't remember the name.

I don't have a good way to record and post (plus I am not at a point where I can hit it consistently enough) so I will try explaining it with text.

The part that I am doing sound correct on the high E and I would guess ~120 BPM. And it goes

"0444,0333,0222,0-00"

If my memory is correct, this pattern repeats twice then the song goes lower and the picking pattern becomes more dynamic. The rest of the pattern is too clear in my head for it to NOT be a song already.

I am its "surf" music but the name will not come to me.

OK, I just started the metronome and I wasn't even close with the 120 BPM. If 120 is correct then each of these are 16th notes.

Apparently my alpha-numeric description wasn't too clear. I sounded it out to my dad and he put me right on it.

Hey KFS1972,
I'm glad you found the tune you were looking for, and those guys are the kings of instrumental beach music. One of my friend's Dad was one of the founding members of The Ventures. I have a live show on DVD, and Nokie Edwards is playing lead guitar on it. The members may have changed, but the music is still great.

lol, I remember when I first started playing guitar, my Dad wanted me to learn this song. It ended up being the first song I "performed" in front of my family at Christmas when I was little.

You are somewhat right - You have to remember that knowing the BPM is one thing, but for guitar you need to know what note value they are using. When you hear shred guitars , when they discuss bmp speeds, they are always referring to 16th notes(4 counts per beat) or sixteenth note triplets(Which is 6 counts per beat) - 180 bpm in quarter notes is not that impressive, but in sixteenth notes its fast.
