Hi, I just bought a fender squire strat and would like to do some upgrades for better sound and playability. I don't know too much about them but I have heard that you can get better pickups and possibly a new nut. Is there anyone out there that has done this and do you have any suggestions as to what type of pickups etc. I should try. Is it possible to just change out the whole pickguard assemly for an american strat? Thanks for any help

Upgrading a guitar that you enjoy playing is almost always a decent idea.
As for changing the nut, unless it is a locking one that is malfunctioning or the regular type (I assume that is your case) and you're finding that the nut is in bad shape and makes for buzzing on the first fret etc, you shouldn't need to change. A better way to say it, if it ain't broke.....you know ;)
As for changing pick ups...different deal. I a, a tone seeker by nature so on guitars past, I've spent too much mony on pick ups but I learned a lot doing that.
First wuestion is, what kind of stuff do you play. I assume that the squire is a '3 single pick up' model. Depending on what you play will determine the pick ups. To your question about the pick guard change out, I think you can (the Squire support page is here (http://www.squierguitars.com/support.php#ownersmanuals) if you'd like to look further for your model). For me, I have a Fender Strat Standard and really want a set of Texas Special pick ups...Want a stronger SRV puch to my sound. So, you can do what you like but it depends on what your style is.

Thanks Jeff this is my first electric and It just doesn't sound right too much humm and I don't think that the tone knobs are even working ( bought it used for $50). It is an affinity strat if that makes any difference , and in very like new shape so I guess it wont hurt to spend alittle to get sounding rite.

Hey Jeff I think I found my problem and I will wait for awhile to upgrade. The ground wire to the output jack was loose, I resoldered it and everything is now working. For what I paid for it it sounds great haha. Thanks again
