last time, I was looking for versions of take five on morpheus for a student, and came up that weird name, Sting cheese incident... I was floored by their awesome sound, and their 13 minutes version of the standard!! Now I'm a fan, but I haven't found any of their record...

Not really a jam band, but Tool does a damn fine show. If you go expecting it to sound just like the CD you'll be disappointed. It's more like a 2-hour long song comprised loosely of other songs. Pretty cool, I saw em in LA this summer. They just got up onstage and did things as they seemed to fit.

Well, most jam bands annoy the hell out of me, but I guess I'm technicily in one...
That and Col Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade ROCKS!
(Oysterhead by the way is my least favorite Claypool project).

And the Dead never borrowed any old blues ideas?
Folks were improvising for hours on end long before the Dead ever came around.

true, true, but the grateful dead were the firsts to do something like that in front of 50,000 people, and still make it sound great.

Oh, I'd love to argue about this, but it's really a matter of taste, and I'm really reacting out of Dead Burnout from being around VT Law School Students for the past two years. Let's just say that most of the Dead exposure I've been getting lately has been from guitarists who are frightened and confused by the low D-B on my five string bass.
NOT my idea of "open" or "jamming."
But yes, being burnt out is no reason to argue, so I won't argue.

I'm not, so I will...
The Greatfully Dead aren't as spectacular as everyone makes them out to be... Tool owes more to Jethro Tull than them. Granted they don't suck, but if you brand Tool a Grateful Dead copy I don't think you've ever sat through either of the bands' CD's in their entirety or read their lyrics.
