It'll probably work fine, but I wonder what it wil do to your tone.
Maybe you should consider getting locking tuners installed in stead?

Well, they are tuners that you can lock. So your strings are 'locked' too, just not on the nut, wich is better I believe.(and takes less of an adjustment to the guitar)

Shaller and Sperzel make em, not sure about other companies.

the problem with locking tuners is located at the nut: the friction in the groves of the nut is the cause of the strings'detuning. It might help not to get way out of tune, but you won't be perfectly in tune when you come back. The same problem is located at the saddles, same causes, same effects. That's why we have "double" locking trems, where the string is held at both of its vibrating ends. If you want to really dive bomb, get a floyd, only Jimi could stay in tune doing that...

which is better than locking tuners or locking nuts?

the nut is better than the tuners, but better than the nut, I don't know!!

My take is....Hey, it's a Squire...Experiment all you want..Drill holes, trade out pick-ups, rout out new holes for hum-dingers, heck.. paint it purple..
However, for truely whacked-out whammy, go for a steinberger...Double ball ends, NO STRING WRAP!! No locking thingies, or allen wrenches.. Check 'em out on musicyo.com I was sceptical, but now a beleiver! For the price of two of your death-ray pedals you can beleive too..

Also, try Carmex on your nut.. Easier than graphite.. Plus soft lips..

I own a steinberger, and those double balls strings are quite a pain to find!! But it true that you stay in tune even after a nuclear attack, and also, you can change the 6 stings in 60 seconds!!

Again try musicyo.com
I bought a dozen sets for something insane like 30 bucks...Also try juststrings.com
