Hey what's up yall, my name's Amar, i'm a beginning guitar player and I just got an electric Ibanez Gio 6-string guitar with a portable fender amp. I dont know how to play the guitar but i can play little bits of certain songs like mainly metallica, but i play them really slow and i mess up a lot. I do need lessons, i was wondering what's the first thing i need to do to learn how to get my fingers perfected to each string, so i dont make the sound all ugly and buzzing? Also are there any websites out there that offer free mini lessons to learn how to play chords and stuff? I just wanna get my finger techniques down for now.
Hi and welcome to the site at least your paticipating in the forums unlike most who sign up.
when i started i could only play little riffs ect and i messed them up totally and my chords where horrible with buzzy sounds. Thats normal for a begginer and yes you SHOULD get lessons just to learn the basics and if you like it continue your lessons.

take lessons as long as you can afford them! i've been taking lessons for 9 months and i learn something new every time. songs arent the only important thing either. scales and modes rock.

I like your style (Metallica), I learned how to play with those guys. Well not actually WITH those guys but you get the picture :)
First thing I would suggest is to learn chords. Why your asking? They will teach you how to position your fingers on the fretboard and give you strenght. The main reason why you're getting a buzzy sound is simple, you're forcing your fingers to perform tasks that they don't usually do. Just practice, practice and you'll get there.
You have the right approach Amar, learn and practice your riffs at slow speed. Then, as time goes by, speed them up. Focus on precision, speed will eventually come by itself. As your fingers get use to patterns and positionning, you will be able to perform those same riffs at higher speed without loosing precision.
Don't loose your motivation, you're in the hardest years. Once you get the hang of the basics then you can truly enjoy playing guitar. It's really worth the hard work.
And if you're in fact loosing your motivation. Come back to the forum. There's always someone that's been there and can help you or send me an e-mail I'll try to help out. You know, from one metallica fan to another.
