I'd say Mark KNOPFLER, from dire straits, was the first guitarist I really recognized...
Then Satch, but I'd say more with his technique than his tone...
Santana, he has a gorgeous tone too, and a phrasing that's really close to the human voice.

Id say George Harrison has the most recognisable tone, for me anyway. I reckon anyone even non-guitarists would know his tone because his playing is so famous.
For me, Slash. Id recognise his playing anywhere aswell.
Santanas tone is cool too.

I hate to sound mainstream, but I would say, Wes Borland formerly of Limp Bizkit, has a very unique tone, and style. The way he mixes delay, and how he uses pulloff's and hammer-on's, almost as a sixth sense. He's not the best guitarist in the world, but I can tell when he's come up with a song. The first time i listened to Duke Lion, by his side band, Big Dumb Face, I knew it was him, even before i knew it was his side band. That's the only guitarist I can think of from my generation of music, that I can pick out, having that all nu-metal bands that come out now, all sound the same. =( o well.

I've heard so many goos reviews about Larry CARLTON, and I have never heard any of his material... Robben FORD loves him, and he is one of the best studio players around, but I can't say what he sounds like... It's a shame...

Your missing out!!
Actually you probably heard him before and never realized it, he was a major studio musician in the 70's, recorded a lot with Steely Dan (thats him on kid charlegmene)
If your gonna pick up one of his cd's I suggest getting his older stuff on the rca label, his newer stuff is kinda smooth jazzy. Last Nite..definetely a Larry Carlton classic cd.

I know I've must have heard him, just like Tommy TEDESCO...
I've heard a little of his duo with Steve LUKATHER, but it was more Rock than jazz, it was pretty cool actually...

ok!!
Jason/Marty sound like no-one else, bends/vibrato/just that lil somehting else too,ya know the "feel"..Nuno's tone rules ,even moreso when on the neck p/u and he goes all hollow, i love that sound, and satch the way he kind of brushes the string with his hand when he picks, not sloppy, but on purpose, on slow stuff..umm hard to explain..like rubina/forgotten pt 2, that sound, like so many overtones..thats unique to him, andy timmons his energy when playing is instantly reconisable.umm..so many more!

The Edge - You could recognise almost any U2 song just by the guitar. True its mostly just delay but its unique.

I'm probably older then most of you, however there are several very recognizable guitar tones that when I hear them - I know. Dickie Betts & Warren Haynes of the Allman Brother Band, Eric Clapton (Although not so much anymore), Santana, B.B. King, to name but a few

I'd go along with Brian May. I could tell it's him within a few notes. You can tell with Hendrix straight off too. Peter Green is pretty recognisable to- better than clapton too.

I can't really recognize albert lee, because a lot of country players have taken a lot from his style...

Willie Nelson, for the most recognizable guitar tone and voice, I love his songs and voice, but please Willie, retire that toneless piece of firewood, that last time I saw him on TV, the hole thats worn in the top was big enough to pull a small child thru....

The most beautiful guitar solos I've ever heard were both by
Alex Lifeson from Rush on the Album Exit.. stage left. Check out the first solo from Xanadu, he uses volume swells to cut out the pick sound (violining is a name commonly given to this) and give a brilliant brooding overdrive from the low notes with a nice hall reverb. Then he violins some really clear natural harmonics. It lasts about a minute and should go on for ever.
The best solo I've ever heard by anyone is probably the middle solo on La Villa Strangiato, he does the violining again, plenty of soulful bending, shrieking pinch harmonics and blinding speed runs and tuneful but irregular and inventive phrasing.
This guys tone has always been awesome but sadly his solos rarely demonstrate his remarkable talent these days.
There's an (inconsistantly) brilliant guitarist called Terje Rypdal from Norway who shares Lifeson's glacial violining and melodic prowess and plays under the ECM label. Most of his stuff is mediocre but some is exquisite.
In my opinion the most consistently excellent guitarist ever is Joe Satriani, check out the forgotten II, Rubina, Echo etc.. Whooah!

I'd agree with the guy who said Wes Borland has a recognisable tone/sound. He's got to be the only one of the 'nu-metal'(shudder) that has is own sound. I like him. Limp Bizkit are going to struggle with out him. That red cap **** Durst is up his own arse. I heard somewhere that Wes might join Guns n Roses.....I really can't imagine that.

I'm surprised only one person has mentioned EVH. He has easily the most recognizable tone of any 80's metal hair rocker.

....or if your favourite album is Never mind The Bollocks? (By the Sex Pistols)

I think EVH is underrated now because all the albums since 1984 have been a load of bollocks. Some of that bollocks is incredibly bad.Awful.Aggggh.I'd rather listen to Britney Spears. Still played well though, and in his own style. But utter bollocks. (Hope the guy gets better healthwise as he is one of the all time greats.)

Probably Steve Morse, Knopfler, Santana.
You could recognize those guys in a milion.

Terje Rypdal, very obscure norwegian guitarist. His tone is very distinctive, he does lots of volume swells and has a vintage fender strat sound. Some of his stuff is bloody brilliant with great tunes and some ripping solos; the rest ( sadly) is crap.
Robert Fripp and Adrian Belew from king crimson; I don't know which is which but they;re both very weird and distinctive players. Check out indiscipline. I think fripp did that solo from Mate Kudesai with lots of prebends and volume swells, we're talking pure tone hear!

I have always loved the way Duke Robillard's plays the blues ... then I heard T-Bone Walker and realized that the Duke was a "T-bone Clone" (I mean that in a good way) ...
In blues/rock, I would have to say Jimi Hendrix. I don't know anyone who wouldn't recognize that sweet Jimi sound.

Randy Rhoads. He used that raunchy mxr pedal.
FireAndIce24

rhoads had a very unique tone, but the winner for me would have to be slash or Lynch. the first time i heard velvet revolver i didn't know slash was in it, but as soon as i heard that smooth glassy tone, i knew it was him .
Lynchs tone is really recognizable as well as his style, i love those "death octave" scales he plays.

WOW, a tough question, 'cause it really depends on who you've heard, wouldn't you all agree?
As for myself, I can pick out a lot of players in one note, but to me the most recognizeable tone comes from Roy Buchanon...the things that guy could do with just his hands and a tele....whoah
and there are so many good reconizeable tones....
Van Halen, SRV, Beck, Johnson, Atkins, Albert King, Wes Montgomery, etc etc...
I think it's probably easier to pick the worst tone I've heard, and it's pretty recognizable and distinctive too! lol I nominate C.C. DeVille!! Funny guy, but just awfull tone.....

I have that CD too....when you say ALBUM you give up your age LOL
It's Albert King with Stevie Ray Vaughn "Sessions"
It was recorded for a tv show that used to air in Canada....
Anyways, while it is true that Stevie tried his best to emulate Albert, I can hear the differences between the two easily...One is playing creamy humbuckers, the other stinging single coils...and any time you hear a flurry of notes, you have to know that was SRV...Albert had the coolest licks, but allways stuck to the right hand lane of the musical freeway, if you know what I mean...

And yes, Albert definitely had a fatter tone, but if you're not listening right at a point where they trade off, it can take a lot of concentration to tell who's who.
