Absolute beginner here...
I have this acoustic guitar in my closet that was my Uncle's, except its missing the 5th string
So, I've just started picking it up and strumming it today...and I'm totally clueless on what I should be doing. Uhm, I guess my first question should be....I have a 6-string guitar with 5 strings. Should I get a string? I guess so....
Anyways...Hi...

Heya Dany..
If you're serious about learning how to play, take the whole guitar to a shop and have it "set up" with some new strings. This way, if anything breaks while it is being restrung, the guitar shop should be liable and will have to fix it.
If you just want to play around and you don't care too much.. sure buy one string.. but you'll probably find that the other strings don't stay in tune and probably will also break soon enough too.

I really don't know if I'm serious or not; I mean, I guess I would have to see how I like it...
Thanks for your advice, I really appreciate it! Maybe i'll talk to my dad, he has some experience
I'll feel stupid asking though =P

Hi DanyC
I agree with the other poster there, take the guitar to your local guitar shop (the small Mom and Pop shop not the big box corporate franchises) and tell them you are a beginner and need to know if your guitar is alright or if it needs work. Have them restring it for you WHILE YOU WATCH you need to learn to do this for yourself. Buy yourself an inexpensive electronic tuner and have them show you how to use it. Also buy your self a chord chart go home and learn to form chords (I started with E A D) This is the key of A if you know these three chords then you can play a song.
I wish to encourage you to learn to play, I started about 26 years ago and I have never regretted it. Your guitar is a source of companionship, entertainment, and creative outlet.
One last thing, the only dumb question is the one you were too afraid to ask!
Happy Trails Amigo!
