Hi there, I'm new to this, so please be patient.

I got an Ovation guitar and the distance between the strings and the fret is too high, maybe around 2 mm. I am told this is called the "action" of the guitar or something like this.

How can I lower it? It doesn have any adjustment screws. Just a piece of plastic that is fixed there. Should I take it out and sand it down? Will it help for an easier playing? I also got a strat, with much lower strings and is a breeze to play.

Thanks for your help.

Regards,

JM

You can lower the action of any acoustic guitar by filing down the nut. Remove the strings and bridge, and mark how much you want to remove, with a Sharpie marker. This is so that you don't take off TOO much.

Use a file to take off the marked section of the bridge. I usually take it off the TOP of the bridge, so that the bottom remains flat. You you take off the bottom, and make it NOT flat, you're tone will suck and the pickup won't sound right.

Do this a LITTLE bit at a time. If you take off TOO much, you'll get string buzz, and it's time to make a new bridge.

Also, make sure your neck relief is set FIRST. Your action may FEEL too high because your truss rod is too loose.

All you need to do is remove the shim under the saddle.
The action is factory set for standard action. By removing
the 0.030" shim, the action at the 12th fret will be lowered
1/64" for low action. If you want extremely low action the
bottom of the saddle can be sanded.

Action settings (distances between string and top of fret
measured at 12th fret.)

6th string,E 1st string,E Action

8/64" 6/64" High
7/64" 5/64" Standard
6/64" 4/64" Low

Hope this helps.
