ok .. only been playing a month. havent had to restring the guitar yet. long story short, i took the strings off today. once they come off, should they be replaced or can they be used again?
my low e needs to be replaced. when i bought the guitar i had the shop do a setup on it and they replaced the stock strings with elixir lights.
i want to try a different brand sooner or later to get a feeling for other brands/types....if i need to replace all the strings now because i took them off .. i'm going to try another brand. if i dont have to replace them all...i'm going to just replace the e with another elixir.

You wanna know a secret. My first guitar was an acoustic Jasmine. Anyway, I've had it evr since I started playing. My guitar is 4 yrs old. And I havn't restrung it once. Don't give a damn if your acoustic gets restrung or not. Mine sounds fine. Idk bout steel strings though, I just like the feel of nylon

maybe i should ask the question again ...
once the strings come off(all the tension gone)...can they be restrung or do they need to be replaced?

well, since you have to put strings on anyways and you want to try a different brand, why not pick up a new set?
I guess you could reuse the old strings but since they are probally cut to size it will end up being a PITA...

i'm a little confused....why did you take them off if you want to reuse the same ones?

Putting your old strings back once they were taken off is not a good idea if you ask me.
Have you ever tried to straightened a piece of metal once it was bent? It never comes back to it's original state. They same applies to strings. Once they were wrapped around the tuning pegs the tension and wrapping altered they original state, making them weaker.
My guess is that you'll have tuning problems and a lot more chances of them breaking off.
I wouldn't reuse them.

Well, let's put it this way...you could restring it with the same strings again. But considering strings are less than $10, why not just buy new ones. Your sound will be brighter and your chords will stay in tune better. Just restring them properly so that they're properly seated on the pegs.

When I take off my strings I usually hang onto them for backups. But that's just because I'm cheap and a pack-rat you can throw them away.
