My advice is to find a good guitar teacher in your area if possible, and take lessons. It's nice to have someone there to teach you theory and songs at the same time. Also you will progress alot faster. Practice alot and have fun!

Do like I did.... start with a D chord.
If all else fails, tune the guitar to an open G and use your thumb.
At least that way you can train your strumming hand.

Yeah I would advise getting a tutor as well, first of all they will help you to practice correctly and iron out any bad habits from the beginning. It's amazing that what feels right to you can sometimes be totally wrong - something as simple as holding a plectrum incorrectly can make a huge difference on how well you will play.

Also I found it really helpful because they can give you encouragement when something just doesn't feel like it's working. Also it encourages you to practice what your teacher gives you otherwise what's the point of paying for lessons if you aren't gonna practice between them?

When I tried to teach myself I found it too difficult to have a structured practice regime, with a teacher I now have a set plan each week and this really heps me make the most of my practice time.

I bought a book. Next month I will renew my membership for local library and borrow some more books on guitar.

Couldn't afford a teacher right now. I even practice on a cheap from China Kapok (USD 22.22 = RM 80.00 ).

Next I will buy Jamorama, and later, Guitar Pro 5.2. Test the demo, the loop and speed tools really help. just select the loop you want to train and make it slower so you can catch up. Awesome software for it's price.

Get some lessons. Learn new songs by looking up tabs. that's about it. It takes some time so be patient.

Well practice 5 min in the mornings, when you got time, bored, bed time, your waiting for a friend (etc) to come over practice 5 mins. Way Better and faster way to improve than 3 hours every other day.

Keep a practice schedule, work on stuff that troubles you for 3 min and stuff you got down 2 min. :cool:

If you can practice 30 mins a day, break that up into smaller bites. :D Good Luck

Actually, you make so much more progress if you practice your 30 minutes in one sitting. To actually make any kind of serious progress, especially if you're just starting out, you need to make a point to sit down and actually practice for that 30 minutes all at once. In reality, it should take like 5 minutes to just warm up. You won't build up strength in your fingers if you just play a few minutes here and there.
