Okay, I am an intermidiate guitarist, but I don't know much about musical theory. (don't know how to read music/ only know 2 or 3 scales) I need for someone to tell me where I can learn a good heavy metal improv scale. If someone an explain one, that'd be cool too. P.S if anyone knows an easy way to learn to read guitar music for free please tell me.

Thanks.

Theres really no scales for metal in general, only blues, asain, middle eastern, and your pentatonics and all the other crazy worded ones.

A good scale for metal which is also part of the Cowboys From Hell solo that sounds badass up to speed:

e|-----------------------|
b|-----------------------|
g|-----------------------|
d|-----------------------|
a|-----------------------|
E|-11-12-15--11-12-15---|
Pm.............

Do the same notes and pm up till the b string, on the b, you play the same notes, just don't palm mute, then play this on te high e:

e|--11-12-15--11h12h15p12p11-11h12h15p12p11---15^full step---|

If you get confused on how to play this, listen to the solo in CFH, is the fisr part that speeds up in the solo. You play it all as triplets.

For Metal, look into the Harmonic minor Scale, Aeolian and Phrygian Modes.
The Harmonic minor Scale is popular because it allows for using a V chord, instead of the v chord in the Natural minor scale (Aeolian Mode).
(V chord = Major Fifth Chord...... v chord = minor fifth chord).

A Aeolian (Natural Minor)

g|--------------------------|
d|-------------------5-7----|

E|------5-7-8---------------|

A Phrygian (3rd mode)

harmonic minor scale is also cool cos it has a diminished and augmented arpegio running through it. also the blues scale works pretty well.

otherwise just minor stuff unless ur inot power metal
