I'm sorry guys. :o I've been swamped as of late. I can get this updated soon with a backing track unless someone's got something they can put up for me. I would also love it if someone can put up a voting thread for last month's track. I'll be back on form next month I promise.

I can do a backing track, I've got a few in the works that I've nearly done so I can put up one before the day is done :)

Julian Vickers

Ok I've got one. It's one that I've been jamming to for a little while just for fun. It's energetic and has maybe a bit of a Dire Straits feel to it. It's not too original or complicated. It just goes

A B C#m

-for the whole track.

Good times! ;)

I say lets make Julian’s track the official BT for this month, so we don’t have to depend on tracks from other sites. ;)

I'm feelin' Julian's right now. I might just have to participate in one of these darn things finally. :D Are we set to go with this one?

Man. I got the track onto my ipod, set it on repeat, and just went to it. I must have jammed over that track for a good hour or so. Better look out... Weslaba is comin to town.

Did you try fingerpicking the lead on an electric like Mark Knopfler? I wouldn't mind giving that a try...

Ummmm... Well actually since I don't have any picks on me right now, I've been fingerpicking the whole thing. Quite frankly I like the tone a lot better that way, and theres some cool licks that you can do better w/o a pick.

it is weird how three chords force you to sound like Mark Knopfler ---as long as you stay in key that is, this is a fun one!!

Once my soundclick account clears, I shall be posting a rough attempt at it. It actually sounds really good if I do say so myself. I've been working with some new gear, so I was pleasantly surprised with the outcome.

Ok here is my first take. I let some strings ring out and timing is off in places but I had a few beers before hand so maybe I'll make it better later. I liked the bg track Julian.

It's creatively named: July GT Solo 1:

So uhhh... it's been a bit over 24 hrs now and my soundclick account still hasn't cleared yet. How long should I be expecting to wait?

Weslaba

Alright, it must be past my bedtime or something because to my knowledge it's working fine. My first GT solo attempt. It still needs a little work, and I might redo some parts, but overall its good and hope ya like it. Weslaba- Gt solo July (http://www.soundclick.com/bands/pagemusic.cfm?bandID=723458)

I dunno, it says my account needs to clear or something dumb like that. Well, this can all be figured out if you would so kindly click the link and listen to my July solo, as it is so appropriately titled.

z0s0_jp: Some very cool playing man. Some great runs. I liked the tone but it was a little low in spots.

Weslaba: It's working fine. Interesting intro very unexpected but it worked. Some very cool riffs and great tone.

Seems we are all, so far, on a similar track. Will be interesting to see if anyone goes a totally different direction with this.

Weslaba

Yeah, I found some triads that fit in with the progression and it seemed to flow well. The track seemed setup somewhat like "All Along The Watchtower" in a sense that the intro started strong then dropped off considerably in intensity. This led me to believe that a little chordage followed by a smooth flowing line would compliment it well. I also was trying to stay away from the pentatonics as much as possible. I could have just as easily could have ripped away at the blues licks on this thing, but it's always interesting to work on new stuff. Quite a few of the licks in it were a direct result of that.

Ha yeah if you listen to Lady Writer by Dire Straits, you'll notice the main progression is pretty much exactly what I did for the BT. Feel free to steal some Knopfler licks from it, I know I will be! Actually I think I prefer the term 'paraphrasing' rather than stealing ;)

Hi guys,
No excuses first take see what you think. I tried not to think Knofler but hey Improvising along I listen back I hear Knofler go figure. its the backing track very nice it was quite quick tempo really thanx..

Playing sounds good, but the guitar track is far too loud. You need to mix it differenty so that you can hear the backing track better. As I said though, the solo itself was good, the mixing... not so much.

equator: I like the acoustic sound on this. I thought it was well played too.

Thanks Nick.
I listened to your take the other day and thought you did a great job as usual.
I promise to give a more detailed feedback as soon as I have the time.
I am gonna listen to all the entries and come back with some comments.

Feedback time my friends. :)

Bar Chord Nick: I enjoyed listening to your take, nice tone, good choice of notes, the timing was perfect. I also liked the double stops licks. Oh yeah, good mix too.

z0s0: Nice take, timing was good, I liked the blues licks towards the end (1:45) and the very last note of your solo added an interesting tension to the track. I did notice at least six times when you were playing off key though.

Weslaba: Good vibrato and phrasing, timing was superb, good soloing, man.

Seazer: I liked some phrases of your take, a few other were chopped, and there was a humming noise throughout the whole track that threw me, plus your guitar was a bit too loud. That being said, I think you did a good job.

BCN - nice phrasing and a good tone, the 'suspended' ending was cool too!

Zoso - not sure what to make of that! Some really good ideas, the heavily chorussed mid section was neat. It sounded a little 'tinny' to me, though.

Weslaba - great tone, very fluid and expressive playing. Liked that a lot!

Seazer - That would have been great - just couldn't hear the BT! great soloing though...

Equator - Ahh - that was good man - brave choice to go acoustic, and you really made it work. My fave so far.

And now to bring you all down to earth...

WrigglerUK (http://www3.webng.com/wriggleruk/BT_July_07.mp3)

Tried to do something a little different. Theres a few glitches but I'm fed up with this one now... too many takes to get even close to something I liked...

I used Ampiltube so it is is not as warm as the Vox...the middle is not chorus effect but 4 overlapped guitars :D Thanks!!
