picking up guitar

I'm looking to get into guitar. I've always wanted to, and it's about time I give it a whirl. I enjoy music that uses acoustic, but I also like listening to electric-based music. That said, I think I'll just learn the ropes with a decent acoustic (unless persuaded otherwise :p). I'm looking for the best bang-for-your-buck purchase.

I've been recommended the Jasmine by Takamine ( http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Jasmine-by-Takamine-S34C-NEX-Cutaway-Acoustic-Guitar?sku=516458 ) by numerous people. It's a supposed great beginner guitar, with quality sound for the price. Should I go with this, or are there better guitars for roughly the same price?

looks like a nice starter guitar and for that price i think i would deffinatly go for it iv heard alot of good things about takamine

Welcome. The Takamine looks a lot nicer than the POS Washburn I bought when I started. Looks like a winner.

My buddy got a Jasmine and the tone quality is pretty sweet.

You can't really go wrong with the Jasmine in that price range.

I have nothing bad to say about Jasmine at all. A friend of mine had a Jasmine back when we were starting out, and I had a more expensive Fender (stay away from fender acoustics... just my opinion though). His guitar was awesome! I always kicked myself in the ass for spending more for a lesser guitar. If you can try it first, by all means, do so! It's always better to "try before you buy". Doesn't matter if it's a super high quality instrument, or a bottom of the line instrument... if you don't test it out in your own hands before you buy, you never know what you're going to get. Quality control isn't what it used to be. :(
