Flight of the Bumble Bee

I know some of you out there play this one from reading past threads, I'm hoping you can help me out.

When playing F.O.T.B.B. do you pick every note or do you use pulloffs? I can do it both ways but I find when I use the pulloffs it sounds more like a bee, it's hard to get that bee-like articulation picking every note.

I feel like I'm cheating when I use the pulloffs though.
It's been a long time since I heard Nuno do it from Extream, does anybody remember how he played it?

i dont know if it was nuno....or someone else...but someone....played this with a delay/echo set for 16th notes..and played 1/8 notes?
or it may have been a "lesson" type of thing to get you to use your effects creatively....

Well when i play it i pick every note and I THINK
your supposed to play it like that but there is a spot
that u do use hammer ons and pull offs but then agian there are probably 200 different tabs of
this but i play it alternate picking style and anyways
just play it the way you want to cause why would you
want to play like somebody else

If you ever heard the composition played on violin it sounds just like a bee buzzing around in a field of flowers...I find it hard to get that articulation picking every note, although I feel more comfortable playing it that way...are you able to get that sound picking every note? Have you tried playing it using pulloffs? Do you notice the differnce in the articulation? Do you reccomend using effects when playing F.O.T.B.B.?

As i remember years ago i used 32th notes.
I think that would give you more of the bee sound,
with distortion.

I remember now i used a fuzz tone sound.
plus the song was used for the theme for,
the green hornet.

ok to tell u the truth ive never tried it using pull offs
and ive heard bits and peices of it on violin and i do get that sound picking every note its just that i pick it so fast to where it sounds like one thing , if that makes any sense at all but its hard to explain what i mean and i use
my boss metal zone with a DOD chorus pedal it sounds really good to my ears but opinions vary

when you listen to the violin recording, some notes are stressed so it sounds like a bee coming around (closer to the mic)
I use my fingers to snap the strings that i want to stress, while I use legato for the others (I saw this technique in Shawn Lane's tapes)

I agree that would work great i can/t belive i did.nt,
say in my reply about useing legato .
oh well good point on snaping the strings.

Go to http://www.guitarwar.com and check out the Hall of Fame. A guy there has posted a complete mp3 with *some* tab - he uses right and left hand tapping played on a clean Strat - it is awesome.

Chris i worked it out again in Em and there's no,
way you can play F.O.T.B and do it right by useing,
pull-offs .For one thing your sliding to fast to,
execute a pull-off .
Really the trick is silding back and forth useing 32th,
notes plus very very fast sliding .
Try sliding from the 5th fret G string down to the 9th,
fret useing 5 notes.All you need is your index finger for,
this part.........................................
The sliding is what give's you the bee sound.
I'm doing more of a Dream Theater style (JP)

that sounds like a good idea, I'll have to try that one. When you say 32 notes, do you mean your double picking every note?

Legato =Smooth connected notes.
16th notes=4 notes for beat.
32th notes=8 notes for beat.
You could say i'm double picking the 32th notes,
for the legato style.

Chris if you play a 16th note then double the beats,
that makes it a 32th note.
I'm Useing a Lagato Style.
By the way what are you useing to get the tune from?
or i mean the notes tab ect?
I have dream theater's J-P's version on mp3 but he dos'nt play,the complete tune.I also have a mp3 of a piano version,
which they play the complete song on mp3.
Mabee i should just send you a short mp3 of me playing 5 notes of it,useing the lagato style? which i can if you want me too.
I think you need to hear a few notes just with the guitar,
only without effects. .Let me know and i'll send you a sample useing,lagato on 1 string covering 5 notes in a mp3 format?

what i'm sending you is ( basic) 5 notes sliding back and forth useing a lagato style for f.o.t.b .(no affects,
just raw guitar useing index finger.

The only guitar version I ever heard was Nuno from Extreme, and that was like 10yrs ago, I hardly remember it. Patruicci(sp?) is pretty good though, I'd be interested in hearing his interpretation, what cd is it on?

I found a sequenced keyboard version of it on the web, don't remember the site. Pretty much played it note for note the way it was written, so I know how it's supposed to sound.

i'll send the mp3 with Patruicci its not really a,not a
full version,its more like an adlib version.(very short)
just a few notes of the intro i would call his version a
show-off sample version..............
Now the piano version i have is by the Toaster's but,
most of the tune is all there its mp3 too.
Believe it or not i also done it by the venture's back,
in the early sixtys they called it the Bumble Bee twist.
No i'm really glad you brought up this tune it's getting,
to be trip for me just working it out.
But it dos cause a sore fore arm if you play it to long.
I'll see if i can find the one by Nuno Extreme ect.
