View Full Version : Stupid Stupid internet

Well, as I may have stated earlier my internet has been acting extremely stupid. I called up the ISP (We have a hi-speed cable connection) and after doing a few things they told me it was simply my browser's proxy setting; which might be a possible culprit if I used a proxy server.
I originally thought it was home-networking related (since normally I connect via wireless) but when I set the desktop straight through to the modem it didn't solve anything.
ipconfig and netstat and ping charter.com tell me nothing I can really use except that the computer is communicating with other servers just fine (In fact my average ping on guitartricks.com is 37ms) so that just makes the fog all that more dense.
Has anybody else encountered this problem?

Does your browser switch to other sites on it's own when you're in the middle of something else??

exactly how is your isp acting stupid? Is it just available one minute and not the next or what? Sorry, apparently I'm not aware of another thread in which you describe exactly what's going on.

To phrase things accurately, what happens is that I restart the computer and things work fine but they slowly slow down to a crawl then freeze up (this is the 4th time I have tried to enter this post)
ANd yeah, the snotty attitude isn't called for.

Wow, I hope I'm taking this the wrong way and you're not talking to me.
I simply asked exactly what was going on with your computer after you asked us for help.
I think I'll wait to help you until you clarify. Sorry if THAT comes across as snotty.

I've been getting slow speeds lately, I have a 6mbit connection and sometimes when I'm browsing it only uses a few hundred kilobits as oppsed to it normally using 1 or 2 mbits (I have a speed meter on my computer that shows and logs all my bandwidth usage.) Its actually messing up my phone as well since its an internet phone. It breaks up when you talk to people and they only hear every other word. Sometimes when I;m using the net, the speed drops down to a few kbits then stops all together. Comcast sent out a technitian and they even changed a line outside that they said was getting old and corroded, but still having the problem. Its either my D-link taking a crap (which we run through 2 since we have the phone...dlink to linksys to all the computers,) or CHSI is capping me. :(

Everybody, I have been worn a little thin lately between a myriad of things and I may have snapped a bit back then, and I'm sorry.
Anyhow, my last-ditch attempt to fix things worked (A system restore). I could've done this from the start and saved myself a migraine headache from hell.

I live in the country. The techies call it the last mile :D My only option would be to get sat internet, but I feel its way too expensive. $500 just for the equipment then $65 each month. I'll stick to $15 dialup and save my stones and buy more equipment :D
