Can someone tell me what a riff is?

or a little musical statement, maybe?
i guess i don't know what the actual definition is....

A riff is generally accepted to mean an important passage in a song, or a sequence of notes which together are recognizable.

E.g.

for "Enter Sandman".

Sometimes a riff is also called a "lick".
