View Full Version : I bought a pack of smokes

I quit smoking way back in 1983 but got the sudden urge to buy a pack of smokes with my beer today.
First of all..... holy crap. The last time I bought a pack it was $3.25
I coudn't believe it when the guy said $10.50. And it this was just a miniature pack of 20.
Secondly...I got home and went down memory lane struggling like hell to get the thing open.
Last but not least, I lit up and took a toke....
Holy crud.... the taste was identical to the first time I ever smoked.
I tried inhaling and coughed my guts out so I too it easier.
Talk about gross. I couldn't catch my breath just walking up stairs....
But my old habits suddenly kicked in, like flicking the ashes in the ashtray.
No more smokes for another ten years.... blech...

ha.....when you said the last time they were $3.25 I thought you must be smoking something other than tobacco! Then I realized where you live. Here is the US they are around $3.25 to $3.75 a pack.

i think it'd be easier for me to quit both drinking and smoking if i lived in the US...10 dollar crates i heard or something like that...if 20-30 bucks is all i need to get all loopy...quitting shud be a breeze

$5 here in Jersey, the cheapest I've seen are off brands for 3 something. It depends on where you live in the us cause of the varying state tax. My brother smokes and every now and then he goes down to Deleware to get a couple cartons for $10 or $20.
I tried smoking a few times and its gross and pointless.

Its weird though, I do like the smell of tobacco though as well as the smell of the smoke (especially a fresh lit one), and since my parents use to smoke, I'm immune to second hand smoke.
Whenever I go riding at this one pit we usually go to, theres always some douchbag who rides with only goggles and has a cig in his mouth (sometimes its my bro.) And everytime I'm like, "Look at the cool guy."

You'd look just as cool smoking a piece of paper... without the nicotine.
Hey I might patent that idea.
Today is day 52 without one for me. Watch taking that "1" cigarette. I had stopped smoking for 3 years a while back and had that "1" cigarette and it was like I didn't miss abeat. :(
I 'do' enjoy smoking, but I don't like the smell on my clothes and of course the health issues. :o

I'm about half way through the pack. Now I get why I quit.
I feel guilty as hell and and nautious after every one.
I'm still getting that taste I used to get when I first started though.
So it kinda brings back memories.
After this I'm finished though. God... 10 buck for smoke. What a waste.
I coulda bought a pack of strings.
Smoking doesn't make ya look cool either. When I see a girl smoke it grosses me out and I totally lose respect for her. Would'nt date a smoker either.

My New Years resolution was to start smoking. I've tried to start a few times since then, but have been unsuccessful so far. I bought some of those patches and some nicotine gum to try to work my way up to it, but that hasn't worked either. I guess I just don't have the willpower to start.

Yeah... that's it for me. I just lit up another one with a beer and already feel nausious.
I quite back in 1983 cause I noticed I was coughing all the time.
The worst part was going to the movies. I was the only one in theatre who kept coughing.
One night I was lying in bed and couldn't stop my throat from tickling... couldn't get to sleep... so I got outa bed, grabbed my full pack of smokes and crushed em into a ball & threw em in the garbage. Then never had another one except for an occasional drag at parties.
Another thing I notice is these new smokes don't stay lit.
I sit em in the ashtray for a few minutes and they go out.
Weird how old habit come back though. I still hold my smokes the same way and worry about my fingers turning yellow..
Smoking sucks man. I had to try it again just to see what it was like and can't understand how I ever liked it to begin with.
Even after all these years though, I still get a craving for em sometimes so I suck on a pencil to get rid of the urge.

Nothin beats sparking up a grit when tossin back a few cold ones.
What I would do for just one drag, but I know what that will lead to.
It's easier to be a non-smoker where I live. It's illegal to smoke in any public facility, including Bars, throughout the State. Going to Vegas is when it get's tempting. Stop the INSANITY!!!!!!
I used to use it as a crutch to relieve stress, but I believe it caused stress, especially when I ran out of them. Stop the Presses!!!!!!!! I need to go get a pack smokes!!!!!!!! With State Taxes they are about $4.50 here. Now I could pay for about 15 players to have a full access membership from what I paid a month for that Crap!!!!!!!!!!!!

Curiosity I guess. Had to prove to myself how gross it was.
I got through about 3/4 of a smoke and felt like puking so I screwed the pack up into a little ball and tossed it on the fire.
Can't understand how anybody could get hooked on those things.
Same thing with alcohol. After a coupla 12 packs I've had it for the rest of the month.
Can't even look at a beer without feeling sick.
Guess it's a good thing... I'll never become an alcoholic or get hooked on smokes.

I smoked one cigarette last night, but its was a stress situation. Involved some off roading and running from a cop. Then once we thought we were fun we off roaded some more chasing a deer. That was just a small portion of the ****ties, epic, scariest night I had ever. I'm definitely fine with just drinking beer, some other drugs were involved to be honest. But yeah f all of that for a while.

yeah, I look back at some of the stupid things I did and the amount of times I could easily have died. Like falling asleep in a chair with a lit cigarette.. going 120 mph down the highway in the pouring rain...falling asleep at the wheel several times..
Hell, my brother died just driving home on a motorcycle.
It's true ya think you're invincible when you're younger then you start realizing how easy you could just snuff out.
Funny thing is, on a forum like this nobody would even know you died.
You'd just suddenly stop writing and everybody'd wonder where you went.

Call me a young fool if you will, but I still think dying young is the way to go. You older gents seem to be liking your age just fine, and that's cool, but I just can't see myself ever hitting that point. The oldest I can imagine myself is 17, and that's how old I am now.

Ok, you're a fool.
When I was 17 I used to think 23 was really old and 30 was ancient.
50 was so far over the hill I couldn't imagine it.
Now I think of 17 as being just a little kid. Ya think ya know so much about life but in reality there's a whole ton of stuff you don't even realize yet.
Getting old kinda sucks in some ways... mainly cause you lose the groovy things you liked best ...like getting noticed by 17 year old girls, going to parties and realizing that a whole bunch of your favorite artists keep dying on ya... (the guy for boston and george harrison for example) but there's a whole bunch of positives that make up for it. Especially in knowledge about how the world works. Plus, when you get older, all those women you thought were way too old for you start looking pretty good.. so instead of just being attracted to teens, you're attracted to all ages.
Seriously though... 17 is still a baby. There's a long way to go.

Wrong, my so young friend, so very, very wrong.
For many years, I could not imagine living past the age of 30. When I was 32, I rode my motorcycle into the side of a car that should not have been there. When I awoke in the hospital, I could not believe that I was still alive. By my calculation, I was 2 full years 'past due'.
But life goes on, until it ends. And anytime it ends, it seems too soon. There is always still more that could have been accomplished; always still more that could have been shown to those who follow.
You are still very young. And already you have shown those who are younger even than you that there are lessons they can learn from you; unpleasant things that can be avoided, and good things that can be cherished.
The Who are not the only band that has expressed the sentiment that "I hope I die before I get old.", and because of that sentiment, only two of them remain. What have we lost because Keith Moon and John Entwistle are no longer with us? Can you possibly argue that the world is better off because John Bonham died young? Brian Jones? Jim Morrison? Janis Joplin? Jimi Hendrix? The music scene is littered with the corpses of the prematurely dead. In my recent interview for the GT Newsletter, I expressed a desire to be able to give due credence to "The Mesiah Will Come Again" by Roy Buchanan, who died much, much, too soon. My own life is all too accurately reflected by Billie Holiday's "God Bless The Child", but the fact remains that any day that starts with you waking up above ground is a whole lot better than the alternative!
Yes, you're a fool! Worse than that; you're a damn fool! You would throw away the one gift that all of us are given at birth - LIFE itself.
**** you!
**** you and all who are stupid enough to buy into that line of thought!
That path leads to premature death, and since death awaits all of us, this line of thought is equal to unnecessary surrender.
**** you!

Dude, dude, dude...(said while shaking my head). LATS summed it up perfectly but allow me to add my own two cents worth. It's totally nuts to think that way and, oddly enough, perfectly understandable. Like Schmange said, we're all convinced of our immortality in our youth. NOTHING can kill you at that point. Even when you lose a few friends or family to drunk driving, over-dose, psychosis or suicide, in your mind you think "Not me. Not me." I'm sure that each and every one of them thought the very same thing. In my life, and I am sure everyone else on GT can say the same thing, I have looked into enough coffins and stood over more than my fair share of closed ones to know that it's an ugly thing to witness. To see someone young, who never really lived, be gone. Be grateful for the life you have. There is nothing, and I mean nothing, romantic about an early death. Nothing.
Look, my birth father died when he was 31 years old (when I was 18 months old). He had cancer but ended up putting a bullet in his brain before the disease took him. My birth mother died a few years later from phlebitis at the tender age of 26. I was 4 1/2 years old at the time. I never really knew either one of them. But the point is, with that genetic load in my viens, every day past my 30th birthday was and is a true gift. Like you, when I was 18, I thought "I don't want to be old" and brother, I lived with every intention of being off this rock by the time I was 25. For several years, I was practically a local legend for my ability to consume copious amounts of alcohol and illegals and still manage to get up and go to work the following day. I drove my car so hammered I don't even remember leaving the party. And then one day, I realized 'Damn, this is a stupid way to live'. Look, you shouldn't plan for a quick death - plan for a long life and live that way.
There is this time/space thing that goes on with youth. At 17, you look at someone in their 40's or 50's and think 'My God, how old - I hope I don't see that age." And when you hit your 40's or 50's, you look at teenagers and think to yourself 'Man, how young, how immature I was at that age." Truth is, I've known a bunch of 'old' young guys and some 'young' old guys. It comes down to how you approach things. A great example for me was last year when I saw Dick Dale (Surf Guitar King for those of you too young to remember him) who, at the age of 70, rocked the house better than anyone else I had seen in years. No kidding. He literally kicked serious ass.
It's all in the approach. Trust us on this, you WILL see things differently in the future. Live fast, die young and leave a good looking corpse? That sort of nonsense dripped out the end of some Hollywood script writers pen. Why people think that dying young is some sort of overly romantic idea escapes me.
You haven't even become the person you're going to be yet. Why cheat yourself out of that? So many people to meet, so many things to do... heck man, you're just getting started!
And like the others have said, for those of 'older' people here, where there is life, there is hope. And yes, when you hit this age, all the ladies start looking good!!! :)

wow, I missed the "die young" discussion up there.
anyways. but smoking...
I dont like Cigs or Cigars. Cigars over cigarettes. I mean, I smoke socially on occasion and dont see anything wrong with it. Like, me and some buds go to Hooka bars downtown every now and then, which is a much better smoke than cigs, hands down. better for you, too.

There are worse things than getting old. The people who didn't get to grow old found that out the hard way.
I don't recall making it sound like a positive experience. I don't regret my lifestyle at all, but that wasn't a very typical night for me. The only positive thing I gained from it was don't get in a car with people that I don't know that well.
As for dying young, I'm not really into that idea. Only situation that I'd want to die is if I went senile, **** that.

Its better you quit now than having something unwanted come along down the road. Kinda like guitar, a lot of people wished they picked it up years before they actually started playing.

I feel compelled to contribute to the "die young" discussion.
I figure that as long as I'm alive and well, I'd rather stay that way. I don't know what's going to happen after I die, but as long as I'm alive, healthy, and sane, I know there will always be things I can enjoy. After I die, I may never get to do anything, or even think about doing anything, again. Maybe that won't be the case, and if so, I'll be ecstatically happy. But since I don't know, I'd rather live forever. The only time I would want to die would be if I lost my mind or the use of my whole body, or something like that.

Maybe I should clarify what I meant when I said "dying young is the way to go."
I don't want to get old and watch people I know and admire die. I don't want to realize there are things I can't do anymore, or things I missed the opportunity for. I don't want to ever feel like the clock is ticking and I'm almost out of time. The thing is, I already feel all of those things.
I'm 17 right now. That's almost 20. If I live to 80 (which I think is a pretty safe estimate), that means a quarter of my life has gone by. A whole quarter! I think to myself "I've been alive for almost two decades now," and my only response is "Bull****. Check the numbers again, you added something wrong." If 17 years go by that quickly, so will the rest.
And yeah, I know the rest of my life is going to be drastically different than this last bit has been, but that doesn't make me feel any better. It just makes me think "so what was the point in all this, then?"
If I truly wanted to be dead, I'd just kill myself. Frankly, I prefer to be living. I just don't want to watch everything I know and believe in crumble. That's all.

Glad you clarified. I doubted that you actually meant that you hoped to check out young. All of you youngsters have way too much going on to even consider that. And don't concentrate on the math. I used to do that. I would sit there at every b'day and think 'one step closer to death'. But you know what? The time passes regardless so you might as well do what you can and what you want with it. :)

heh... I have a death counter widget on my desktop.
If I live to the same age as my father, apparently I'm .58% closer to death.
I've got 11,982 days, 18 hours, 48 minutes and 38 seconds left.
And I just wasted the last 38 seconds typing this out.
