In my experience, very few women play guitar. Some are good, some are bad. There are only a couple of female guitarists I can think of, but whether that means anything I have no idea. One of my old girlfriends was a very good classical player - I've only ever seen 2 women shred though....

At my school, boys got the choice of guitar, cello or trumpet ( ) and girls got the flute, violin or treble recorder - maybe sexist. Maybe the guitar is seen as more of a guys instrument?

Maybe it's called '**** rock' for a reason.... girls don't like shred?

There are so many more guy players than girl players that you can't even compare it. As it stands, guys are better. That doesn't mean guys are inherently better, it just means they win by numbers alone.

Also, I think there's more motivation for guys than girls. Guys can play any genre of music and no one thinks anything of it. Guitar-wielding girls seem to be pretty much kept out of rock, for some reason.

And it's common knowledge that chicks dig guys who can play guitar.

The women of the appalchian mountains in the late 1800's played a finger picking style that was considered at the time to be the feminine way of playing guitar. Completely unmasculine to play like that. Later in the mid 1900's a man learned that style of music and became very famous for playing it. His name was Merle Travis. Chet Atkins, Doc Watson and John Lenon patterned their style of playing from Merle. How many players have been inspired by them? If it had not been for the mountain women developing a type of finger picking, guitar playing would not have evolved to what it is today. Then of course their is Mother Maybelle Carter that taught Johnny Cash all kinds of stuff.
So in conclusion, not only have women been instrumental (pardon me) in styles of playing, but in my opinion are at times better than male players.

Yeah, this thread could get dangerous. I think iiholly has her castration scissors out and ready to rock...and I believe it would be a well deserved de-masculinization. (I most likely butchered the spelling of that word, but so be it.)

Its a rather silly question. Not many chicks play the guitar. And those who do seem to have a different approach to it than men. Heck, the women I have heard play have all been pretty good.

Yep, silly question.

Kaki King.... one of the only chicks who play guitar I can stand. In fact, I love her music. she was one of my major influences to get into percussive acoustic stuff.

however, Im sorry, but I just dont like chick bands... they usually sound way too cliche to me.

Aww you can say it, just don't sound that good. :p

I could care less on what gender plays what instrument, if it sounds good I'm gonna like it. I could make an endless list of bands that have guy guitarists that I hate, so for now I'll just say Emo bands :p . Joan Jett has a few good songs I like.

Before posting this 'silly' question I wondered if I should post my thoughts too.

I dont think girls can do less better than guys  , however , I feel that guys try harder. I was reading through an article which stated that guys are better at competing and they try harder when they are competing against girls. Does it mean that if your sis plays guitar, you will naturally play better than her?
Guys tend to be more aggressive and more individualistics hence do better at playing individual instruments. On the other hand girls would take inclusive approach and make a great band .... Unfortunately, I do not see any high flying girl bands to support my theory. Instead we see very good quality female guitar players individually. This has turned my theory upside down

When I play my guitar , my girl just looks at me  . When I ask her to play something on Keyboard she tries but never hard enough . Maybe she is just (un)happy to hear my guitar ;)

DO you agree with my theory ?
Best regards,
CC

Between classic sibling rivalry and the fact that guys hate to be 'beat by a girl'.... yeah, you'd play better than her - or die trying! :D

There's no way that if a guy and a girl practice the same way for the same time that one is going to be better than the other. Guys usually have bigger hands - maybe that might help, but otherwise no difference. Guys may generally be competitive, but guitar playing isn't a competition.

Based on the numbers, maybe women in general don't want to play the guitar? If they did, and women played as well as men, then we'd know more female guitar players. Something must be up or we'd have a Doris Satriani....

So, either:

Women don't want to play guitar, or
They're not very good at it for reasons unknown

????

hmmm, thats probably true most the time.

however, my girlfriend is alot more competitive when it comes to organized sports than me, while when it comes to anything notsoorganized (i.e. pinball, board games, frizbee golf, etc) im a hell of alot more competitive than her.

perhaps the same thing applies here, just in reverse.

like, alot of girls I know want to learn the guitar, get one for christmas, learn a few chords, and stop there. the desire to learn the trade is there, but the guitar-carrying competitive gene isnt dominant in woman, as it more commonly is in men.

...so the moral of this story is that guitar is carried in the genes.
...and Ive proven no point. :p

I don't think its really a fair comparison. There aren't enough female guitarists to compare to males. I say you should look at it by individual rather then by female or male.

Also the getting a guitar for Christmas example is bogus, because I know plenty (more guys then girls) that have done that.

I've heard this debated so many time, and I've come to the conclusion it just really doesn't matter.

I've heard some outstanding female guitarists, yes there are more guy players out there but I think girls can be just as good. I have a 13 daughter who has been playing for 3 years and she's almost as good as me (she has a good teacher)! I've been playing for 27 years and she rolemodeled her father.

Ok who plays better. Neither, and that's the bare bones of it. Micheal Jackson's Lead guitarist ( name escapes me but she was hot ) said in an interview once If you can play one note well you are a musician. How cool is that. I got that open e down man. Lita Ford Could rock my world in more ways that one, Girls holding guitars look better, they have a come get me look guys don't have. But as for playing. There is nmothing to compete with. We all play we all enjoy we can all shred or whatever it's down to taste.

So just don't go there on all this who's better gig.

You're right!!!!! Her name is Jennifer Batten and she is considered one of the best in the world!!!!!!
Then there's that woman from Argentina, named Carina Alfie. She masters many styles, including shred. She's on Steve Vai's "Pro-Found Label" which pretty much say's it all. It's almost impossible to get in on that label.
You also might want to check out that Beauty who's endorsed by Dean Guitars, named Katrina Johansson. She's from the Mid-West and sounds incredible.
Sure there are more male players, but most can't play better than these girls.

Fret spider

pretty simple more guys play guitar therefore there are more good male guitarests. that simple.

maybe guys are more competitive so they practice more to be the best. as guys have bigger hands they probably have better reach.

but on the othere hand, guys fingers are 'fatter' so girls can probably be more articulate.

and at the end of the day these are only trends not rules. there are plenty of guys with small hand s and girls with larege ones.

and anyway what defines better. being able to play faster, or more complicated. you cant really say that as everyone views different things as more important. some like speed, some like catchy riffs, some like harmonically interestin ideas. watever floats your boat.

at the end of the day iot aint inportant, look at guitarests as muscisions and ingor their sex. generally a way to view things in life.

edit; above coment obviosly doesnt apply when it comes to relationships, sex etc

I think we're agreed that there is no reason that men and women can't play guitar to exactly the same standard. I think the question needs to move a bit...

Why, if women are as good at playing guitar as men, are there so few 'famous' guitar players? Jennifer Batten, Bonnie Raitt, The Great Kat - that's all I've got off the top of my head...

cos at the moment rock and metal are the most popular guitar music. which is generally shouty music. which personally i dont like when girls grunt vocal and stuff like that.

also girls dont tend to like that sort of music as much so less play it.

lastly the other type of guitar music which i call pop punk. is a genre that isnt very progressive, so they aint considered good. possible with genre the fans tend to be young girls who probably have crushes on the guitarests in the bands. i talk of busted and mc fly. that sort of stuff.

the main thing is few girls play guitar. maybe we should ask the question why do so few girls play the guitar, cos thats the crux of the matter.

Well, I had a rather long and descriptive post prepared, but now my computer decided to crash so I'm just going to have to try and remember the important parts. Pretty much I figure that if girl's thinking is like guy's in at least this way, which I have to assume since I have never been a girl, then they will do things based on what they're around most, and see people being rewarded for. For some reason it must be that less girls than guys are exposed to guitar playing, and in fact it may feed itself, because there are so few girl rockers that girls have less of a reason to become interested in the first place. Lots of guys start because of dreams of glory and fame (and ladies), and girls don't see as much of those rewards for female artists, simply because there aren't as many to see.

aschleman
01-10-2007, 09:10 PM
I solve this myth mathematically...

You figure 1 out of every 10 guys have some experience level of gutiar playing... So you're looking at 10% of the male population that plays/played guitar...... For girls it's more like 1 out of every 100 girls actually get involved at some level with guitar... putting it at 1 percent... The odds that a male guitarist stays with it for a long period of time is a lot smaller as well... So it's just a matter of the amount of male guitarist to the amount of female guitarists... The female population doesn't have the shear numbers that the male popluation of guitar players have to support a whole bunch of talent. That doesn't mean that there aren't talented female guitarists out there.

jiujitsu_jesus
01-10-2007, 09:34 PM
Some good female players have already been mentioned - Kaki King, Maybelle Carter, Jennifer Batten. A few more:

#Gabriela, as in Rodrigo y Gabriela:A female Hetfield with an acoustic! I'd love to hear her plug into an electric through a Marshall and riff out.

#Emily J. Burton from Fireball Ministry: the band may just be Black Sabbath on steroids, but this girl can play.

#Adalita from Magic Dirt: Aussie band, I don't know whether you get their music overseas, but she can play quite well, and she's a great songwriter, too.

I agree with Aschleman and Earthman - guys win through sheer force of numbers. If playing the guitar wasn't socio-culturally such a "guy thing", I'm sure we would have just as many great female players as male ones.

So we've settled that women can play as well, but there just isn't enough of them to measure up, thus the deeper question of why aren't they drawn to it to the same degree? So I don't think that it has much to do with exposure or anything. I'm the youngest of 3 siblings. My Dad plays acoustically, our oldest brother is excellent, and obviously I (the youngest) play to some degree, but my sister "learned" 3 chord shapes and gave up. It's in her "blood" and she's been exposed from an early age, but never showed much interest. Ok, that example doesn't sweep the species, but yeah...I think it just stems from a biological gender difference. For example, the recent (fairly obvious, but now it's official) study that women talk more than men...like 3 times as much on any given day. Women just love to talk. It's a stretch perhaps, but maybe it contributes to why they don't have as much motivation to invest in dedicated subtle forms of expression, namely guitar, when they'll just tell you how they feel.

Oooh...and carrying that line of thought, it might reflect how there's certainly no lack of women singers.

u may have a point. i am pretty sure that guys aree a lot more competitive than girls, making us want to be the best. i dunno if this is genetic or scocially programed but i do think its there.

its like if you talk to lots of girls and u ask what ur hobies they dont have any. i only know a few guys who dont do some sort of hoby seriosly, wether its martial arts a musically instrument competitive sports ( im not talkin a kick arround in the park), or somethin. guys just tend to want to do these things.

i dunno why, and i do find it anoyin.

i do have a theory though, its evolutionary. in cave man days the males of the species had to impress the mate, they would do this buy tryin to prove they were good at stuff. fighting, hunting, wateva. females on the other hand had to look like they had good genes. so they have to spend time making themselves look good as well as be high standin in the scocial scociety, probably why women talk more.

i might get slatted for the above but its just a thought.

Kevin Taylor

Ok, let's face it.
Guys get into their teens and the first thing on their minds is how to impress girls... So they get a guitar and a band.
Jock guys are also obligated to be the agressors when it comes to asking girls out and compared to girls, most guys are too shy to make the first move.
Especially when there's a bunch of asshole other guys out there who treat girls like crap and make the first move anyways.
So the nice guys end up hiding in their bedrooms listening to music and learning guitar with the fantasy of meeting that special girl who'll come along and appreciate them
Meantime...those same girls are being hit on by the asshole guys who have the nerve to make the first move.

Hence the reason that hot girls end up going out with obnoxious guys.
Cause they had the nerve to make the first move.
Girls are like sponges....they want a boyfriend and the first guy to show interest and be forceful is the one they're going to go out with.

So... what ya gotta do as a guitar player is get into a band...and be forcefull with girls... Make the first move...be cool....invite her to rehearsals....act like a star.....
You'll get the girls no problem.

Another trick is when you're playing a gig.
Start on the left hand side of the audience and look at each girl individually.
They'll look back and give you the signal they're interested..
Wait till they're alone betwee sets and make your move.
"Hi....like the show..... wanna go outside and smoke up?"
Next thing you know you're back in your hotel room.

Yeah, I think the whole thing with "girls have no hobby's" is pretty weird.

My girlfriend plays drums, on occasion, but she's heavily into art and photography, and very good at it too.

Infact most of my friends that are girls are into photography and art, oddly enough. Another girl I know sings and plays piano, doing her grade 7 at the moment.

Also, read this interesting article on girls violence going up. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/8101517/site/newsweek/)

I don't know if its just a phase or what, but it's interesting.
