A lot of us aren't very comfortable with our voices (as musicians,) however singing is always required, especially if you don't like to depend on others when it comes to the finalization of your work.

As of late, there really aren't that many memorable voices, because for what a lot of people lack today, they make up for it with what the kids like, and that's raw screams. However, it's important to have a good solid (well trained/practiced voice)_ to hold everything together, because as a band you can't always rely on the amplifier to get you through the night.

I grew up listening to Bob Dylan, and there's one thing that I always admired about this guy, and that's that he was comfortable with himself. He Didn't try to compete with others, he was inside his own world, and he really trusted himself when it came to the final words and melodies of his songs.

With listening to his records while growing up, I gradually becamne more comfortable with my voice. When playing panio and guitar, (and writing songs like a mad man all of your life) your voice is something you have to learn to count on.

I guess you just have to try and find your sweet spot. Although I'de rather rely on my chops instead of my voice, there will always come that time where you have blend in with someone else, or carry your own tunes. Overall, regardless on whether or not you pride yourself as a vocalist, as a singer who would you compare yourself to? Or who have you tried to model your voice after?

people say i can sing like david gilmour, because i have a low voice, but actualy i always wanted to be a tenor, because about 100% of the rock singers are tenors, i always wanted to sing like mercury or ian gillan, but i dont think many people can sing like one of those guys, and i know i can't... my range is completley sucks :)

Ive listened to myself and I reckon I sound like Roger Waters also of Pink Floyd. I dont mind, but Id like to be able to sing much higher like a Beach Boy or Jeff Buckley.

I am lucky, I have the voice and tone of a perfect singing angel who just won the best voice in the universe and recieved a degree in perfectness.

My wife say,s my voice is likened to that of thousand geese being mowed down by a huge rusty, one wheeled combine harvister that need's a bloody good service.

But what does she know she like's Elton John.

If she is right then for years people wern't crying because they were touched by my sad song's and perfect voice that tugged on heart strings, but rather out of pain and agony inflicted upon there ears.

I've got good range, crap voice... i sound a little like tom yorke, but when i was messing about recording my self, i sang some really really low notes, and i swear to god i sounded just like barry white.... scary.

I have a fairly good range, having started singing in choirs when I was a youngun as a soprano, and since then I have fallen down to occaisionally singing bass. I can get a resonable tenor, but I tend to use a lot of falsetto on the higher notes. I kind of sound like a cross between Thom Yorke, Bono, Eddie Vedder, Roger Waters, Bob Dylan and Frank SInatra.... maybe not. It's kind of hard to know how you sound, I alwasy think, but I at least am pretty sure I can sing in tune.

Just for the record, I hate singing.

That said, I think I sound like a cross between the guy from Staind and the guy from Tantric. But then again, you always sound different to others or on tape than you do to yourself. So who knows . . . I could sound like total crap and just not know it.

Like Joseph, I prefer to rely on my guitar.

That's good to hear, it's important as a vocalist to never quite feel complete. Always try new styles, new techniques. Although it's great to know that other's think you sound great, but what really matters ias how you feel, and if your comfortable. Our confidence can only last so long if it's based on what other's think. However, I wish my previous girlfriend would have been more sincere pertaining to my vocal abilities. Sometimes a little healthy criticism is all you need to get yourself on the right track.

Yeah, I think it's safe to say that most musicians today rely on those screams to get them through the night. But personally, I would rather rely on my ear, and being able to carry a note. Because after a while, the screams just give us headaches, I'de love hear more balance in the music industry today (when it comes to male vocalists.) Could it be that Scott Stapp is the only one who can carry a note, there's got to be more!!!

I start out sounding like Denny Doherty of the Mamas And The Papas. As the night wears on, and the cigarette smoke takes its toll (for Christmas, I want a world-wide smoking ban), I sound more like Alice Cooper by way of Johnny Winter.

The next day I sound like a rusty nail being pulled out of a hardwood plank!

Some people say I sound like Aaron Lewis sometimes from Staind like when he is singing background vocals on the song No Sex by Limp Bizkit(they suck). Others say I sometimes sound like Chris Cornell or even Ronnie Van Zant from Lynyrd Skynyrd.

my singing used to be a bassish type, but i've been practicing my singing (since my guitar playing is way up there, singing level way down there, trying to even it up), and i get like a tenor type now.

As far as who i sound like? I can't say anyone, because when im singing, i close my eyes totally and sound like me. Plus, im 14 years old (So far:D) and my voice has already changed dramatically, but is likely to keep doing so for a few years, so who's voice i'll end up with beats me.

i just pray i dont have a bassy voice when im 18, i absolutely love singing tenor.

The whole of my life people have told me I cant sing and I have no voice for it...my family included. Having tried recording myself I thought they were right coz me voice sounds awful when recorded....but my music teacher keeps telling me anyone can sing regadless of what they're voice sounds like. I dont particularly like my voice but its not gonna change, so I guess i'll stick to being an instrumental writer.

I totally suck at singing, unless Im yelling my head off like Brian Johnson.
Recently though I discovered how to make my voice crack and now I sound like David Lee Roth with a pair of vice grips in his pants.

I used to be able to sing like Kurt Cobain, but after my voice changed (I'm 15) and after I got into Metallica and stuff, even Smells like Teen Spirit is too high for me... I've got a pretty deep voice now, and I sound kinda like late James Hetfield, That Scott Stapp-dude in Creed (although i hate their music) and Phil Anselmo in Pantera when he doesn't scream...

Don't feel bad. At least you don't sound like Peewee Herman with throat cancer. So someone please tell me where I can find a music teacher that will tell me that I will be able to sing one day. Nevermind, I should just keep my mouth shut.

I find that if I fake an English accent with a nasal voice, I sound a little better. (To myself at least)
