first off, I am not a rap fan but this story caught my eye.....kanye "bone-yoddeler" west won best hip-hop artist but did not win best video, so he storms the stage and cusses everybody out and states the awards have no credibility because he did not win(this is while the winner was onstage getting award)....how lame can one be

My favourite stage tantrum is this, if it was indeed a tantrum:
The award for Best Rock Video was being presented and Rage Against the Machine, among many others, were nominated for it. In the end, the award went to Limp Bizkit. As vocalist Fred Durst, was making his acceptance speech, Commerford climbed up part of the set and rocked it back and forth, threatening to jump. Durst had just finished saying "It's a big surprise to be in one of the world's most hated rock bands, and to be getting an award right now", when his bandmates pointed Commerford out to him. He continued, saying "and we've got a mad man", then began to egg Commerford on, saying "Stage dive, dude" and "Take a dive". By this time the crowd had started a small "Jump!" chant. Fred then began saying the typical thank-yous when Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland said "Thanks to that guy right there!" while pointing to Commerford. Fred replied with, "Yeah, this guy should be getting the award—he's rock and roll." Limp Bizkit continued with their thank-yous, with DJ Lethal even saying "Everybody is a winner tonight". Durst finally said "And this guy's a pussy cause he won't jump". The show soon went into a commercial break. Both Commerford and his body guard were sentenced to a night in jail, though he later stated the stunt was intended as a joke. It is rumored that the incident led to the break-up of Rage Against the Machine, despite Rage vocalist Zack de la Rocha's citation of creative differences as the main reason for his departure from the band.

You could say that about any rapper. It's called rap.
*Interesting fact*: The word sample just reminded me that the song "Relax" by Frankie Goes to Hollywood used a two-second drum loop of John Bonham playing drums, but I can't remember what song it was from.
he's just expressing himself. i dont know who won best video but it could be somebody he got beef with.

I think there should be a new rule that talking about rap should not be allowed. Today's rap probably makes over 90% of us sick to our stomachs, and when we express our opinions about it, the other 10% get their feelings hurt and start whining and giving out negative reps.

Seriously, alcohol doesn't put different words in your mouth, it makes you say what you always say, just louder.

I'd bet he would sell more records if he'd just shut up for a while....
I never respected Kanye to begin with, but that lack of respect went to hate after his stunt on t.v. during the Katrina benefit...

I actually like "some" rap. I think that there are some songs that are very clever, rhythmically.. and I wouldn't go against a whole genre of music.. Now I agree I think that certain styles within the genre are way overdone, but having said that I still wouldn't say that the whole genre makes me sick, because it doesn't.
I think I'm turned off more by "Death Metal" than rap.. and I have certainly tried to find a song of that genre that I like... Cryptic sure has sent me plenty.. but I still have yet to find the appeal to it. But I wouldn't ever say that the whole genre should be banned.
I guess I try to find the good in all music... Its as individual as we are, and that's the way that it should be.
Although Kanye's reaction to losing... very poor in my opinion. He is supposed to be a professional.. and that was just very immature and lacks class.
It'll cost him eventually (if it hasn't already). As I understand it, he's a joke in the rap 'scene' anyway, so all he'll do is alienate those already less likely to buy his records...
Some rap is good, but we're talking NWA, Public Enemy etc. A decent, modern rap tune is as rare as rocking horse crap...
And as for 'he's just expressing himself' - he has the right to say whatever he likes, and we collectively have the right to laugh our asses off at him for whatever he says. He sounds like one of the top ten most conceited individuals in the world. Maybe he'll win an award for that...

Meh...you all know how i feel about rap. I do like Beastie Boys cause they're hilarious, and RATM, if you condsider them rap.
There's no excuse for acting like this. Ever. He didn't win simpy cause he's no the favourite. He has a quad stacker sized ego, and it's good to see him shot down.

Yeah that was a bunch of BS. I can listen to Bone thugs and Eminem because they have a style that I like and put some feeling into what they are saying. Most of the newer rap is awful compared to the 90's. Someone should bring back the old school rock tunes like "Chery Bomb" and such so the kids will have something else to dance to.

Hear hear. I bought Rage's first album the other day, and I can't stop listening to it. Something about hearing Zack de la Rocha scream about the same things over and over again makes my heart sing.

probably a weird post, but since we're talking about a genre most of us could care less about, i suggest that you all check out a group like Nonphixion. it never fronts as just another bravado-filled pastry that we can find on our local top 20. its just hiphop, but it says "rock and roll" to me. something about the fact that they had an obsession with black sabbath and slayer, i dunno. check their myspace out. theyve since broken up years ago, but i think im gonna try and pick up their album again (mine got stolen from my car about 3 months ago:(.
yea some rap is good. most rap today sucks because its the same things over and over but occasionally something good comes and thats the type of rap i like. i don't like the idea of somebody talking about how gangster he is or how much he has, i like real rap, the rap that was lost in the 90s.
as for kanye, although he's got his own problems, it wasn't very professional showing off on tv. even worse on awards. people don't get awarded for things like that.
i agree with prs.. every time a rap thread is made, most people hate it and the rest hate the people hating it.

meh i have nothing against rap or hip hop either...its just like a different genre of music to me that i am not keen in...similar to emo and all that..but that stunt he pulled and the attitude he showed, acting all noble and stuff...its repugnant...he'd been doing charity stuff too i read somewhere (yes i have alot of free time)...so im not surprised if it WAS a publicity stunt...ah well who knows what goes thru his head...

It's people like him that give rap a bad name, and turn people off from the genre, but unfortunately, that's exactly how most rappers are now days.... in it for the fame and fortune only. Every time I see some rapper, or anyone for that matter, wearing all sorts of jewelry and mainly those horrid teeth covers I throw up a little.

I could go on and on about this but hey rap today is...well about ppl gettin rich n famous and havin fun along the way...its hilarious to me as a rap fan i could care less about kanye more than likely its an attention ploy...theres things about rap that rock/metal/ect. fans can't understand because its more than the music its the lifestyle...same can be said for most genres of music...rap isn't about complex structure, its about the feelin the message, whatever that may be. It shouldn't be analyzed...just taken for what it is...you can hate it or love it!

The way I see it, you can't focus on one aspect of a song to determine a genre. For instance, guys singing like girls isn't the only thing that makes emo emo, like Bullet for MY Valentine, some of they're vocals sound a little emo, but they are in no way an emo band. Some of Rage's vocals come off rap like, and they even had B Real and whats his face come on stage and help them sing How I Could Just Kill a Man (since they did cover Cypress Hill), but I don't think anyone should consider them rap from the rocking guitars and sweet bass lines (even though most rap is bass lines.) Like the song Bullet in the Head, that song's guitar riffs are 100% rock oriented. One time when I was shootong pool a few "gangsta's" came in and said "hurry up and put rap on before someone puts on that rock s***'' (reffering to the juke box.) After they got done picking their stuff, I put on some Rage and they were freaking out cause someone put on rock. Most people who listen to rap focus on vocals, but they wanted nothing to do with it.
i have to say a persons personality shouldnt take away from his art.
kanye may have acted like an asshole, but you can't say he's not a good writer. some of his lyrics (from songs NOT on tv or radio) are really good but aren't hip enough to appeal to teens (the music industry's biggest target).
just take "roses" for an example.. and im sorry if anything's inappropriate in here..
I know it's past visiting hours
But can I please give her these flowers
The doctor dont wanna take procedures
He claimed my heart can't take the anastesia
It'll send her body into a seizure
...
Remember when I was nine?
Tell her everything gone be fine?
But i'd be lying, the family crying
They want her to live, and she trying
I'm argueing like what kind of doctor can we fly in
You know the best medicine go to people thats paid,
If Magic Johnson got a cure for A.I.D.'s
And all the broke muthaf*&$%#s past away
You tellin me if my grandma was in the N.B.A.
Right now she'd be ok?
...
those are some good lyrics.
and please dont associate bad behavior with rap cause i know many non-rap based groups who do some bad stuff offstage.
and rap is a totally different type of music. it isn't meant to be analyzed. there is no secret technique to it. and in most cases there is no careful song structure with many different instruments or anything like that. its just some beats layed down on some tracks and some people talking poetry over it. its just something you hate it or love it.

I'm sorry but i would have to agree with z0s0_jp.. Can't say that appealed to me whatsoever.
and I guess Faith Hill now falls into the sore loser category as well.. what is happening that people can't keep their composure. Although she wasn't as bad as Kanye still not very respectful of her peers. And she says she was joking.. sure didn't look like it to me.. lol
those are just words. if you read em its not the same as hearin him sayin em cause he says em with a certain accent. and its not always about the poetry, its about what the song means to the person who wrote it.

Damn pure, those "lyrics" or "poetry", whatever you want to call them, just made me get a little sick at my stomach, and if I had heard them be "sung" I probably would have puked on myself.
If a song has rap "vocals" and rock guitars, what should it be called? Whatever it is, that's what RATM was. And while we're at it, what makes a rock song a rock song, and a rap song a rap song? Is it the vocals, or the music? If it's the vocals, then RATM is rap... if it's the music, then a lot of "rap" could be concidered rock. So, answere that question.... what is the defining part of a song that places it into a certain genre?
(mad props to you marcos for mentioning BT&H! [one of the extreme few rap groups I can listen to])
