Why does that happen???? 1) Turn on the computer
2) Put pick, tuner, capo.......everything
within reach of the computer.
3) Get my guitar out of the case
4) sit in chair and adjust where needed
5) find something on site I want to learn
6) study a couple of times
7) reach for pick to give a try..................not
there!!!!!!!

How does it leave by itself?????

Nice to meet you dave. I'm kind of new here too. There is a lot of stuff to learn here. If i could only find that pick.

sometimes my pick drops and it disapears. i look all over, feel around the floor for it and don't find it. my floor is never messy and its easy to see, its got a wooden design on it so its not dark, yet i can't find the freaking pick. then a day later, its right where i was looking.

Nice to meet you too, smurf. I noticed you are from the Missouri Ozarks. I was born and raised (first 20 years of my life) in Troy, MO (close to Wentzville, MO). Most of my family still lives in the St. Louis area, and my brother moved down to Camdenton a few years ago. We've visited him a couple times - it's a really pretty area...

I think Jim Dunlop made a synthetic fiber that randomly disappears. If he didn't, people would only ever need to buy one pick.

I was having the same problem... so I ventured to e-bay and bought a package of 72!! If I lose 72 picks anytime soon.. there has to be something really really wrong.. lol

ahh well i've learnt my lesson.

I always put my pick behind strings on the lower frets depending on the flatness of the pick, (seen it in some pic on the web), so my pick dissapeared by itself only a few times a year.

My 9 month old had one in his mouth the other day. Scared the ...... out of us at the time but can laugh about it now.

Ususally if I can't find one laying around I go to my 15 year olds room and look on the floor....Yep theres ONE :)

My 9 year old sems to like playing finger style so I don't have to worry about him that much.

I've given up from staying in stock on guitar picks. When I have them its nice, when I don't its just typical. Besides it makes me practice more on my classical technique.

When me and my friend built our studio... we bought a lot of 100 or so picks off ebay... just various brands and thicknesses... and we kept about 20 of them in a box close to the door... the rest of them... we threw all over the place. We both lose picks like it's our job. So we figured we can't lose a pick if there all over the place.

Jim Dunlop is really good at making clear picks... I use a lot of Dunlop Stubbys... and the specific thickness that I use is literally clear... no coloration.... just clear. To combat this I took a permanent marker and colored the label on a few of them... It just ended up turning my fingers blue... and I lost all of them eventually anyway.

Now that I'm away from the studio I have one pick... that's right... one. I figured that if I only had one pick I would be more cautious about it and be less likely to lose it. I've had it for about 2 months... It's getting pretty worn.

I end up having to buy multiples of everything. 5 pairs of sunglasses 3 sets of car keys. Picks in bulk. A box of pens.
I still lose everything cause I just automatically put things down without thinking about it. I can't count the amount of times I've sat down and gone 'where the hell is my pen?' or 'where the hell is my pick this time??'.
Then my conversation with myself usually goes like this.

"Oh great.. it's search time again. Yep.. lovely search time... sure enough, just when I'm all ready to record, I go to find the one thing that's always in the same place and yep... it's gone. NOW Where the hell is it??"
By about the 5th time around the room I'm going "what the hell!! it was right there!! Where could it have possibly gone to??. Now I don't even feel like recording anymore...
Then there's the usual swearing at aliens or God or some unseen force that keeps doing this to me..

Then I'll find what I'm looking for in the least likely place, where I'm sure I've already looked there a half dozen times
.. "what the friggin hell?? There's NO WAY I PUT THAT DOWN THERE!!"
I'll be totally convinced that somebody is screwing around with me, even though I'm the only person in the room.

yep... I've had so many picks vanish into the fourth dimension that I buy 'em in 100s...

The fact that I have to do this pretty regularly speaks volumes...

I don't know if the dog or cat are eating them.... jeez....

Hurray! I'm not the only one!...

Currently I've not been able to find *ANY* the billions of picks I have scattered around me room for months, so been working on fingerstyle. What really gets me though is the fact I've got two of those pick holders you stick to your guitar...they still disappear...(though admittedly that might be down to me not always using the damn things, )

I'm sorely tempted to attach a pick to a chain and wear it around my neck...

LOL. My son has one of those, and he never uses it either. Looks like a big black pimple on his guitar. I don't use em cuase .. Asthetically (IMHO) I hate the way they look. For gigging I use the old 2 sided carpet tape.

...or a trip to A&E when you drop your pick, glue your hands to the carpet and on your return find your pick has once again vanished...

(Not that I'm speaking from experience or anything.... :o )

Ha, picks. The one thing, and i mean the ONE thing, I never misplace.
I've had the same 6 for almost a year, mainly cause i always forget to buy new ones.

I just shove em in my pockets and wash my jeans with pockets full of picks. That way there's always picks in my pants. :)

I used to lose picks all the time, especially when I only played acoustic. Then I bought my electric and discovered that the pickguard makes a wonderful safety deposit box for picks. I've had the same one for like....a couple years at least. It's getting so thin I should probably paint it a different colour, so I know what the thickness really is.

maybe i should make an empty corner in my room and just toss my picks there. if a pile of picks disapears, lets all gather around jim dunlop company with pitch forks and torches.

I agree. Jimmy's already on thin ice with me on account of putting a shotty switch in my $100+ wylde od.

My son reminded me that my Dad really did the gorilla glue on the fingers thing one time. Dad is 80 years old this year and plays a Taylor 714 just about every day. He was having problems with the pick moving around in his fingers, so just before a jam session at his house one night he glued his pick to his finger. I guess it worked. One time when I talked to Doc Watson, He showed me that he uses a pick with "tread" on it to keep it from slipping. You know those ones with the rough part on the fat end.

...what's everyone's prefered picks? i like ebe and dunlop tortexed. hard and for the tortexed, it's normally .88 or 1.00mm sizes.

I play Dunlop Tortex as well...1,5mm for me!
I lose them all the time, but I bought a pack of twelve last year October, and I'm still going strong.

Dunno where the packet is, but there is always a pick nearby should I need one...usually a few on the floor, always one in each guitar case, and others randomly scattered.

I find the best place to look for lost plectrums is in the pockets of trousers or shorts that you werent wearing at the time...thats where mine turn up.

Brain 1mm.

Got the tread on the grip.
They're not perfect for everything, but they're the most versatile pick i've used, and i use them exclusively.

I go to quite a lot of bluegrass festivals and I've met Doc and Jack Lawrece a couple times. They're are real nice people. Doc told me how he got his first guitar one time. Each of them have autographed my guitar case. So have Doyle Lawson, Sonny and Bobby Osborne, Ricky Skaggs, and a few others.

ive met Doc Watson, hes a cool guy.

as for picks, I always love anything at 1.5 mm. thats my fav. and on acoustics, when I use a pick, its usually a Fender heavy.

...when I went to work at that camp this summer, I brought a good 10 picks... came home with 3. and one of them wernt even mine, I found it on the ground.

picks suck, bring on communism.

i normally beat this one by keeping the pick in my change spot in my wallet. keep two picks in there and i'm good. always have a pick on me.

I find that Tortex picks need to be fresh to work properly. They soon lose that grippy texture, and then they're just like any ol' pick.

I keep mine in the mojo bag that came with the silver picks I use sometimes. 3 of them, plus red, orange, and blue Tortex, plus 3 different stone picks sent to me by a buddy in California who makes them.

I find the hard picks tend to 'clack' on the strings, but there's some major tone to be found if I can get the hang of approaching the strings just so. Ya never stop learning....
