a picking mix-up:S

lol ok this is hard to explain but here goes...iv always identified myself as an inside picker...or economy if you like...BUT
recently iv'e been learning alot of lamb of god/trivium...especially lamb of god...as i play other things in economy style i want to make sure i carry my exact style to my metal rhythm playing...

FOR EG

the song hourglass by lamb of god

This means in economy if i start with an upstroke i can skip down to the next string from the low D....BUT on the second triplet chug to further go onto (8 10) would i need to then start with a down stroke? to then be able to skip from the D to go to the A to do 8 10?

confusing i know lol but any help in this very confusing picking dilemma would be very much appreciated

Why don't you hammer-on from the first 7 to 8 on the A string and then proceed alternate pick begainning with a down pick on the next chug

yeah.... or strict alternate picking would also work better - but then I pretty much alternate pick everything, so I would say that I guess.

both economy & alternate picking styles have their place - don't limit yourself to one..... likewise alt picking inside/outside....

thanks guys much appreciated...i stil decided to pick it all for more aggression...but went with the way i thought...i was using a mix of economy and slight alternating....my guitar teach sed adopt one style or the other...im sticking with economy as i always have

Just an opinion (not knockin' anybody) but..... :confused:

Teacher myself, I have posted, and seen many times posted on GT, that there is no "set way" of doing things.

What may be good/best/better for one player may not necessarily be the case for others. Also, there is no "oneway" to play anything, and to grow as a musician (not necessarily as a guitar player) you need to try all ways find what works for you.

Kudos for your reply stating that you tried all ways mentioned and found that the way you had been playing was the "best" way for yourself but (as a teacher who always asks for input from his students [to grow as a teacher]) I still HAVE to questions why your instructor says that you need to pick one or the other? Seems sort of limiting to myself.

Again... not knocking you or your "teach"... just curious about why and on what basis the statement was made?

Yeah, it would be limiting, but I'm not sure that's what your guitar teacher means.

If you've yet to 'master' either technique, you don't want to by trying to learn both at the same time. As it's all muscle memory, trying to do alternate and economy picking will probably lead you to randomly mixing the two.

Alternate picking is a more useful technique, so that should be the starting point. Once you can alternate pick consistently and continue while skipping strings, you can think about switching from inside to outside picking alternate, and then economy picking. For economy your licks need to be worked out so you have the right number of notes per string so you can continue picking in the same direction as you cross strings.

I don't have a guitar in my hand, so am having to visualise, but I don't think it's possible to truly economy pick the run you've tabbed. To be able to economy pick it by my reckoning you'd need to take another note on the E string when you drop back down to it (4 instead of 3) otherwise your pick is heading in the wrong direction and you're alt picking anyway.

I teach people to stick to one until they have it down, and then look at the others. It's like if you tried to learn a whole/half diminished scale at the same time as the half/whole - you'd probably end up playing chromatics...

I think your teacher is right to tell you to stick to one for now - you can't build a solid picking technique if your hands change styles without you realising.... :eek:
