I feel so stupic posting this but I have a bad problem. I though today 'I will try some heavier strings'. So I got them massive GHS Zakk Wylde 10-60 gauge. They are on my guitar and the E B and G are tuned fine, but I can't tune the heavy wound ones. I says on the tuner that they are tuned, but they sound really bad, completely out of tune. What is happening?

Have you "stretched" them?

Yes, it makes no difference

Sorry but I am no "techie".

Do you have a trem system? Floating or fixed (I think that is correct). If so does it have a locking system? Could be you may need to add another spring. Possible that the tension is too much.

I say this becuase the 2nd guitar I owned was a yamaha RGX? series back in late 80's. It had a floating trem with locks ( I was a shredder and Satch freak (that was when he only had Not of this earth and Surfin out). I had proghressed past nines and moved to 10's and I had the same problem. The trem only had 2 strings so I added another 2 and that fixed the problem. May help may not.

Good luck and I know one of the mods here has the answer to your "set-back" (positive spin on "Problem")

No worries sorted it. I have a Les Paul fixed bridge (duh!) and it turnes out that beingheavey strings they have to be tightened lots (the reason i didn't tighen them much to begin with was because I thought i was too much tension) all fine now though. They are really good strings

You'll want to check your intonation; could be why it sounded so bad.

Nah, it was tuned all wrong. I was tuning them really low, the correct note, just the lower one. It just felt like it was going to break my neck if I kept turning the machineheads :p
