i have a question. a finger vibrato and bridge vibrato have the same name, and quite rightly so as they do the same thing, alter the pitch. this i get but what i am not sure on is this. the tremolo pedel and the guitar tremolo have the same name but do different things. one affects pitch while one affects volume. y is this? is it just an age old mix up by someone?

making the pitch of your note change up and down (like with finger vibrato or with a whammy bar) is called Vibrato.
making your volume go up and down repeatedly is Tremlo.
Yes, people call vibrato tremlo but they're technicly speaking out of their butt.

So where'd the name floyd-rose tremolo come from?

because people have been missusing the word "tremlo" for a very long time.

thanks guys
i thought it was just a mix up but i wasn't sure. although i have been playing guitar for 7 years the first 3 were acustic and the next 3 were just a sort of "plug in and go" time so it is only latly i've started ythinking about tings like that. i mean, i can set up a guitar perfectly, agusting the trus rod + neck easly, but i don't know what anything is called or y.
Thanks again.
