D/f#

I don't really teach guitar persay, but I do help youngsters who ask for help and one thing I have done over the years is play the D/F# chord when the song calls for just a D. I have passed this onto every youngster I have helped.

The way a D/F# chord is made is make the standard D and press the 6th string down with the thumb at the second fret.

My question is this:

Am I doing them a disservice by teaching them this?

I don't think it's a big deal. I would teach them the real way to play it then tell them they can just play the D, then later in life as they get bet better, they'll kow the right way to play it and will be more capable of doing it.

There is nothing wrong with showing them how to play the chord, however do not tell them that it is a D chord in Root Position. Since it has F# in the bass it is a D chord in First Inversion. This chord definately sounds cool ( and I prefer to use it most of the time over a basic root position D Major Chord ), however it's function can be and is different than that of a normal D Major chord in Root position.
