is it better to learn from tabs or play everything by ear even if it takes you 5 days to learn one little part. did zakk wylde or any other great guitarist use tabs to learn or did they mess with the guitar until they got the right notes?

i dont know abt zakk wylde but tabs wud be a good way to start off i guess...depends on the level of guitar playing...i wud say...

I think a combination of learning through tabs and learning by ear is best. Start off by learning the chord progressions to your favourite songs with tablature, and as you slowly get a feel for rhythmic and melodic structures, start training your ear.

Do both, learn by tablature and then try to train your ear.

However, I'm going to take it one step further and advise you to learn it by actual musical notation. If you ever plan on having any kind of career or going further with music, this skill really helps.

I had the same question. My instructor is adament that you (we) learn the sound of each cord because you will use that sound hundreds of times in other songs. He said that (yes, most of the big bands did learn to play by ear), some people depend on tabs and have never trained their ear to what the chords are supposed to sound like so they can't play without tabs :eek: Tabs are good for us beginners because we have to know those too but focus on memorizing what each chord sounds like so that you don't have to depend on tabs. I'm still training my ear on the chords too.
