Practice, practice, practice...

Dont' get discouraged if you can't get something right on the first try. It's all about how much you practice. You get out what you put in. Good luck.

1 buy an electronic tuner
2 buy a song book and learn to read tablature
3 buy the relevant Cds
4 try and find some guitar playing buddies
5 relax watching a live band

Something i'm working on at the moment with one of my students:

It isn't always your fingers that aren't allowing you to play something (say a chord), sometimes it's simply the position of your arm, try bring your arm closer or away from the neck.

Basically, always be prepared to think "outside of the box", and take nothing for granted.

Oh yeah, and buy a bloody metronome!
