I searched the forum for how to set up a guitar and did not find anything. Does any one know of a good step by step guide. I have an American Strat.
this? (http://www.fender.com/support/setup/stratsetup.php)
Dan Erlewine has written some good books on setups, might be worth a look on amazon as well...

^^ That's a pretty good duide... it's from the Fender site so you can trust it. However, they're showing you the factory spec way to do it. That's the way their techs do it before the guitar goes out. This gives them the best overall consistency in their product... It may not be the best set up for you specific guitar. I suggest picking up "The Guitar Players Repair Guide" by Dan Erlewine.... He's probably the most well known guitar guru when it comes to anything tech related... He's Stewart-McDonalds lead consultant now... and he use to own an infinitely famous shop called the Guitar Hospital in Michigan known for restoring vintage guitar that were thought to be unrepairable...
I do a lot of set-ups on a lot of guitars... and I own a few American Strats my self... I could write a step by step for you but it would take me quite awhile... I suggest this book because it's got a TON of good info for anyone wanting to get into doing their own tech work. It covers everythng from regular maintenance, finishin, nuts, necks, to set-ups... and it's geared around Stras mostly. Go out and grab it!!! good luck

Thanks. I just got on Amazon and bought it. Is doing a set up difficult?

Not necessarily. It can be... If the guitar is way out of wack. Things that can become difficult are intonation and floating trem setups. If you have the tools though, setups are fairly easy. just pay attention to detail at first until you learnt he ins and outs... That book is a great resource. I've read it cover to cover three or four times... and I've learned something new each time. Good luck. If you need any help on anything just let me know... feel free to PM me if needed.

Wow, glad this thread was started, just went and bought a Dan Erlewine book: "How to make your electric guitar play great!". I look forward to reading this book. :)
I'll still probably take it to my local tech every 6 months for a full set up, but it'd be useful to know these things incase I need to tweak some things that aren't quite worth leaving it for a few nights in the tech shop (even though the tech I take my guitars too is an amazing tech.)
Hoorar. :)

I bought a JS1200CA from this guy.
My guitar came perfectly set up so he knows what he's doing.
He has tech info on all the things he does for a pro set up.
It's not a "how to" but it has tons of great info.
