View Full Version : What do u consider an injury?

I've been playing for 2 days now, about 40 minutes a day, and noticed today that both my index & middle finger have a "slice" in the them. When I say slice, I mean- it never drew blood- but you can tell that maybe the first 2 layers of skin were cut into by the strings.

Since I don't have calluses yet, should I just play anyway to toughen them out?

No doctor here and I cannot recommend this but when I was a young buck and didn't practice alot but had to go through long sessions of playing on unconditioned fingers, superglue worked great.

its normal..eventually they will toughen up..and ull lose ur sense of touch at the fingertips...pretty cool tho..

as for me...worst injury..my ever consistent incompetent ability to improve my playing at higher speeds and learning theory...to add insult to injury...im broke and stuck at home doing nothing...

thank god for GT

I practiced anyway today & it didn't seem to aggrivate the cuts at all- they actually look more healed LOL. They weren't right on the tips, so I think that's why I got away with it.

I've heard about useing super glue, but I wouldn't trust myself with it, I'd more than likley end up glueing my hands together! :)

I've been playing for ten years and if i play tooooo long then my skin will peel. It takes getting used to but it's a part of guitar life. After awhile you won't even notice anymore.

I actually have a perminant dip on the end of my middle finger from where I've been playing, it's cool.

They should be! ;) It's better technique to play with the very tips of your fingers--well, generally speaking.

Mark Pav-
You're right, they "should" be...I think I got them from day 1 of practice, I didn't really know what I was doing :D . Not that I do now of course, but I'd like to think I've made some progress! :o

dude don't use superglue. itll postpone your calluces and you'll never be a man. its natural for metal to cut flesh.

My last trip to the US, I nearly didn't get in...

Customs weren't too happy with the fact that they couldn't get a decent finger print scan off my left hand because the tips of my fingers are polished smooth from years of playing....

Maybe I should be a burglar? Anyway.... it's all part of the fun. Losing the sense of touch is weird at first, but then cool 'cos you can pick up a red hot kettle and not feel a thing* :D

* For Legal reasons, I am not suggesting you do this. I did and survived... don't blame me if you're not so lucky.

I have a practice routien that i've started forcing myself to do every night (well i enjoy it but still it's more organised then just screwin around with teh guitar for 2 hours) and my skin is constantly pealing. like you know when you hop out of a swimming pool or bath or shower or wateva and ure skin is all wrinkled, well my skin pretty much just falls off :P it's awesome.

lol to the customs thing!

It happens. Later on, it will happen but you won't really notice it too much.
