After one week and still nothing? Come on now people, I had heavy metal shoved down my throat 'till I was 17 and I still know this. Prince.

Who played lead guitar on Michae Jacksons 'Beat It'?

Ow, ow, ow, ow...me! me! me! I know!...(Ahem)
Non other than Eddie Van Halen, with the rather scary and amazing Jennifer Batten "stepping-into-his-shoes" during live gigs.
As confident as I am I just know that's gonna be a trick question....

Led Zeppelin
08-02-2001, 02:07 PM
Yeah. Speakin of Jennifer Batten, I saw Jeff Beck as a opening act for Sting last week. In fairness he gave her a few lead parts. It was a good show but most people didnt appreciate it because most people there were big Sting fans and the two kinds of music genrally dont atract the same audience.

Anyway, who played rhythm guitar on Beat It?

Willdridge

I know there was a rumor that Eddie also played the riff for "Beat It"...but I always had a feeling that was rather suspect...I'll confess then - I dunno...

Ok, how about this? It could be a bit too easy, or too hard, I don't know.
Who was the first Beatle to try marijuana?

Guitarguy123

John Lennon....or Ringo

Bardsley
08-03-2001, 11:57 PM
It was Ringo. Bob Dylan introduced them to it, handed John Lennon a joint, and Lennon asked Ringo to be his "royal taster". Ringo then smoked the whole joint himself, not realising the unspoken rules, and promptly got quite sick.

Since we're talking trivia, here's my question. Who's the first guitarist ever to use a wah pedal? (actually I don't have an answer to this one and guessing it's not Hendrix)

Guitarguy123
08-04-2001, 11:05 AM
No it was Hendrix. In fact he invented the wah pedal.

Bardsley
08-04-2001, 09:41 PM
He didn't invent the wah at all, it was already being made by Vox at least before him. He invented the univibe, and the octavia too, well Roger Meyers did for him. I don't know who invented the wah pedal, but they were originally used as foot operated tone controls, before peoplle came to realise the effects that could be created by rapidly swinging it back and forth. I will do more research to find out though.

Raskolnikov

I heard that the wah was invented to simulate the sound of a sitar.

I have decided to go into the musical research industry - see my other help with the danse macabre.
Here is a web site that explains it well http://members.aol.com/analogmike/kraft.htm , I shouldn't plagarise, but I might sum up:
The wah seems to originate from country recordings of the late 5os in which players used their tone controls. After that, pedals started coming out that made it easier to work during performance. It seems that vox was the first company to market the wah successfully, with their pedal being designed by an engineer called Brad Plunkett. However, it also states that other companies such as ampeg wer already experimenting with the idea.
Therefore, the inventor is hard to trace, but it has its roots in country music, and the father of the modern wah is probably Brad Plunkett.
Read the article though, it is quite interesting.
See, ask me more questions, I will go hunting. Maybe I should go on allexperts.com

ow about this? What were the origins of the tremelo unti on a guitar? It seems that the fender strat is the first guitar to use one, but that is on;y on looking at a very basic bit of info. Who came up with the idea?

Guitarguy123

All I know is that in my son Jimi by James Hendrix, He says that Hendrix was expirementing with a new kind of contraption called a wah pedal. but maybe thats all he was doing, expirementing

Bardsley

I am certain that Hendrix would have been a major factor in the developement and popularity of the wah. Probably without him it would still be a strange country tone pedal or something, but as far as I know he has never been accredited with the invention of any technology, and I am sure that he did not actually make or invent the pedal itself.

The Stratocaster was the first guitar to have that paticular design of vibrato bridge. Bigsby was making vibratos before Fender (and solid body guitars for that matter).

Bardsley
08-06-2001, 08:01 PM
Ok, but who came up with the idea? It seems to me a fairly odd concept; to have a movable bridge that will provide vibrato effects. Well, maybe not so odd. SO are Bigsby the first?

While that discussion continues undoubtedly...
Who originally wrote (and recorded) Whitney Hustons "I Will Always Love You"...it's another easy one, but just trying to keep the trivia going.

Dolly Parton wrote the song that Whitney Houston destroyed. Since someone already brought up "Beat It", who played guitar on Jackson's "Black Or White"? It's another easy question, but it shows that the guy does have some amazing guitarists on his recordings.

Every time I hear that Whitney Houston abomination, I collapse on the floor in a fit of laughter, amid flashbacks of Carol Burnett doing the Tarzan yell on her old TV comedy show.

OK well i just gave away this little piece of trivia in another post so its probably not gonna come as a big stunner and most of you probably know ayway but why did Dave Mustaine (lead guitarist of Megadeth) get kicked out of MetallicA?

Brian Black
08-09-2001, 07:39 AM
I think Mustaine got kicked out because of his drinking, which is pretty wild considering Metallica used go under the alias Alcoholica. By the way the answer to my trivia question(Who played guitar on Black or White by Michael Jackson?) is Slash. He also played on a couple of other Michael Jackson songs, as well as albums by Iggy Pop and Lenny Kravitz.

Willdridge
08-09-2001, 09:11 AM
It wasn't just his drinking. He was also very difficult to go on with. His even had Megadeth in therapy (the whole band) because he was that hard to get on with.
Slash eh? Didn't know that. These are great! Learning loads here. Great idea Zep, great idea!

his real name was Hendrix or Hendricks?

I read somewhere thatDave Mustaine got kicked out of Metallica cos he kicked James Hetfield's dog...

Maybe that wasn't the only reason, it could've been his drinking too, but that might've been the last straw
