I'm sanding my guitar. just a little paint near the edges, not all the paint's gonna come off.

I didn't wanna hijack another thread but coincidentally we're sanding.

i have no tools but sandpaper. are there any ghetto tools i can make with stuff i can find around my house? And i also need some sanding tips like what strength to use first, then the next and so on..

i have these:240, 150, 100, 60.

alright, im no pro at sanding. but if you really want to dig in, use a big grain first, then move down finer and finer grains to smooth and polish it.

You can wrap the sandpaper around things that are close to the shape that you're sanding. Some spray cans or soup cans are good things to wrap the paper around so that you can get brutal with the paint on the body edges while not changing the shape of the guitar.

its a flat top. i'm sanding near the edges of the top only. i guess cans could work for that.

well, if you want to go all the way through your paint down to bare wood, use the 60, a 100 is what I've been using to get through my pain all the way, and it's taking longer than I'd hoped. the 240 is pretty fine grain, that's the kind of stuff you'd use for a final touch-up before re-painting.

you could also run down to home depot or lowe's or whatever home improvement store you have there, and pick up a sponge sander for less than $5. they're pretty nice in that they can form around edges and stuff too.

if you just want to do sanding on a flat surface, get something like a small piece of wood, like a 2" x 2" square or something, and attach the sandpaper to one side of it, then you can grip it and sand away. it's easier than trying to just use sandpaper.

sand without block of wood compared to with block of wood

and is there a certain technique to sanding or do you just move your hand till you see wood, while checking your sandpaper for paint build up?
