I was driving along today and I heard a 2-fer on the radio and it got me to thinking. Who are under rated guitarists?
What I am saying is. Who is out there that we have all heard and they are actually very good guitar players but we do not put them on the "guitar scale/pedastal"
Here is my first.
Steve Miller.
We know he sings great, has a ton of hits, but we skip over his solid guitar playing abilities.

Just a note: This forum has been around a long, long time... if you have a question, there's a very good chance it's been asked before (http://guitartricks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3131&highlight=underrated), so it never hurts to do a search first.

Ted Nugent
You think so? I was going to say that he was overrated... :o
But anyway, I think that Jennifer Batten is underrated.

I noticed it but the thread was included overrated guitarists as well.
I'm probrably splitting hairs here.

Billy Howerdel - the music he wrote for the A Perfect Circle albums was amazing. Very dark sounding without being very heavy or fast. Orestes and 3 Libras are perfect examples.

Prince, he's not considered very "rock n roll" but he's a pretty tidy axeman,
Noel Gallagher, its just not considered cool to think he's any good but i rate him anyway,
Jeff Healey, he plays pretty good for a blind white boy, nobody ever gives him a mention  , these are just my opinions tho :)

Prince is pretty awesome at the guitar. I remember seeing the rock and roll hall of fame induction of George Harrison where he played the solos to "My guitar Gently weeps".

If it was actually him playing the solo on "let's go crazy" in the movie "purple rain" and not just air guitaring. then vastly underrated.

It is him actually playing... He's probably one of the most underrated pure MUSICIANS... he plays all his own instruments when he records his albums... Much like the way Zakk Wylde does when he writes his songs... But Prince is an amazing guitarist...... he just doesn't play "guitar" music... I don't like to listen to his stuff but I know for a fact he can play.

Sort of like Kravitz on his first album. He's underated also. Very solid rhythm and leads have a good retro feel with out going overboard.

Some underrated rhthym guitarists... Hetfield from Metallica and Nick Cantanese from Black Label Society...
Dare I say... Mark Tremonti is underrated??? The guy can shred... but not much in the character department I guess. He writes some decent songs too.

I agree. I mean, I accept that he wanted to start a project that was a bit more progressive than Creed, but he could've tried something other than jumping on the "OMG we playz HEVY ROK n we cn also play scalez liek REALLY FAST!!!!1" bandwagon.

I liked Creeds stuff from My Own Prison... I think that was the name of the album... everything after that was just... eh... I did see Alter Bridge play live... just out of curiosity... I think they should have went out and got a more dynamic vocalist. He only really has one sound. All the vocal tracks pretty much sound the same to me... Tremonti is underrated mostly because with Creed... he was never allowed to really use solos... Either way... you can deny deny deny... in mainstream/pop/modern rock... he's probably without a doubt the best guitarist out there. I obviously wouldn't put him in the same alley as the great metal guitarists and virtuosos... But he writes some great stuff. But then again... he has been named Guitar World Player of the year a few times... so I guess he can't be that overrated... but rather... Forgotten.

Yeah, he probably has been forgotten to some extent, but I actually preferred his guitar work in the Creed years to the stuff he plays with Alterbridge. I know it was mostly rhythm (although he got to play the odd solo as well), but I prefer an interesting, well-composed rhythm to an overdone, cosmetic lead. He writes songs for Alterbridge as well, but Creed was a more dynamic compositional unit, with significant input from a number of songwriters. Alterbridge seems to involve Mark pulling most of the weight, which leaves their work with less variety... :(
So yeah, he's a good player, but Alterbridge as a band leaves a lot to be desired, IMO.

has anybody mentioned vivian campbell? he is certainly one of the most underrated guitarists of the eighties right until today.

Vivian hasn't been mentioned yet. Good One. Who was the guitarist for another 80's band White Lion --Vito something?
Underrated also.

I think John Abercrombie is underrated as well.
