im gonna re-string one of my guitars and keep it tuned 1.5 or 2 steps down, just to play heavy stuff... shoudl i get the heavy ernie balls (9 gauge i think) or is there a better choice

:D its a pesonal thing. theres alot of famous people who play metal, and theres lots of heavy guage players that like 11 guage strings. soo what ever ur used to. i use 9 guage there good for almost anything

If you're going to detune you don't want to use 9 gauge.

Atleast 10 gauge or 11 gauge.

You'll also need to get it set up by your local guitar tech.

yeah what Akira said. 9's definatly arnt good for detuning. what have you been using if thats a bigger gauge? 8's?! whoa.

so I'd say a 10 minimum for a lower tuning. I use 10's for everything, basically. it sounds better.

and also what Akira said, you'll want it set up, or it will always be going out of tune.
