Basic chords are just triads of root third and fifth:

Ex: A-C-E or D-F#-A

As far as what you'd need to know, the answer is "intervals."

^at the zentao site, where it says "I prefer to use 'b3' rather than 'minor third' is to be ignored." Please say minor third etc. instead. He says many of his students have found names like "perfect fifth" and "diminished fifth" to be confusing. Not my problem: stupid students doesn't give him license to completely write off how music is communicated efficiently.

I have an Intervals and a Chord Constrution tutorial at my lesson site (http://lessons.mikedodge.com).

Just look under the Beginners to Advance Series. It'll start you form the ground up and give you a good understanding of how this is all put together.
