Its time for a showdown !
Ladies and Gentlemen, tonight these two fine guitars will duke it out for you audio entertainment !
In the BLUE corner, the Line 6 Variax 700 HT set to..'59 Strat, Bridge and Middle PU.
EEeeeeeaaaaaaaannnnnnd..
In the RED corner, a Fender '89 California Strat (The Quack-ocaster) also set to Bridge and Middle PU.
Vote for.... not which one sounds the best.... but for which axe was made by Fender !!!
Please remember, no ebows or knees to the head and I will post the results in 7 days !
For those interested both were recorded using an Avalon vt737sp with identical gain-staging, compression and EQ running into a MOTU 828 mk ii into a G5 running Logic Pro 7.1 @ 24/44.1

I voted the strat as guitar B, although I am not knowledgeable in these things as I do not own a strat...... hope I'm right!
I did play on a Variax once. I have to say I didn't like a lot of the tones, especially the jazz guitar ones, although the strat and tele tones sounded nice.

Quite intentional, I promise ! I just couldn't think of a guitarish substitute for knees !

To my ears, they both sound like they've got rubber bands instead of steel strings. B sounds a little more 'real' on the attack, which may be an indication of processing. Neither tone appeals to me, so I can't get exited about not knowing which is which.

Well thank you for that little ray of sunshine. My sole is a little lighter and my day a little happier for reading your comments.
They both sounded bloody great in my studio !

I'm concurring with Rubber Bands, I voted B because I actually thought the first tone sounded more processed, there was something about the tone that didn't feel right. Boy am I gonna feel stupid when guitar A is the real one! :o

I also voted B for being the 'real' strat, for the same reason Lats stated. It seemed to have more pick attack than clip A.

You misunderstood my comment. I put inverted commas around the word 'real' to indicate that I thought it sounded "too good to be true". As I said, I suspected some digital hanky-panky.
I voted for A as the real Strat.

The strat was guitar A and the Variax was guitar B
MES I couldn't work out how to move your vote so consider this a moral victory
