Hey wassup people? I found this site last night looks pretty cool, I have been playing guitar for about 9 to 10 years with some time off in between but I am trying to get back into it hot and heavy. I was in a couple of go no where bands when I was younger and left them because the guys would rather drink or smoke weed than practice so I said C ya. I see a lot of talk about Music Theory on here I don't know how to read music lol I use some tab but I like playing by ear and making my own stuff up. My only problem I have is I fell into a Blues rut I can play any SRV you want but when I try to play metal scales or licks it all comes out like a metal blues :D again I would rather not play someone elses music I want to make my own licks and riffs so does this mean I need to learn about Music Theory?

Thanks for any input

Well, music theory is pretty important for learning about scales and stuff, which probably makes writing music easier. I don't know, I never really got into that stuff. In my opinion the best way to learn guitar is just to play guitar, and copying other people can be a great way to learn about song structure and the like. Of course, I don't know much music theory, so I wouldn't take my opinion at too much value. Welcome to GT!

I just run across this site today and I gotta admit im lovin it.......What a better way to get to know other axe slingers?

I myself began playing when I was 13........and then just stopped when i was about 18. Altho I never really played in any bands, I just lost the interest in it all when i was free at that age I guess. Just recently got back into it and was amazed i still knew half the stuff i did when i set it down.

Im into the heavier Metallica,Megadeth kinda stuff. Ya know ......Puppets,Ride the Lightning......all that..........

Hey Guitar_guy welcome to guitar tricks :)

I sometimes have that same problem too, I am primarily a Blues Guitarist but sometimes I play other styles, And Whenever I'm jamming with my friends(Who like to play metal btw). I try to come up with a metal solo but it always sound very bluesy SRV-Hendrix style
