Well, it will do 40 simultaneous in/outs at 24/48 or 20 at 24/96 (hence the desk full of pres) as well as having a bazillion channels of midi.
Not your average studio in a box.
And for another 2k you get video capabilities two !

That's a very cool looking setup there. My question is how the hell do you keep it so clean? Is it always that clean?
Dr_simon

dust causes crackles and pops so it gets either vacuumed away or blown off with a can of compressed air.

I've got a full studio setup, but to tell ya the truth, it hardly gets used.
Most of the stuff I've been recording was done from within the computer.
fer instance.... the recordings below were done right from within my old Mac G3 (a 1997 computer) using Cubase and just virtual instruments like Absynth, Pro52 and B4.
http://s93744050.onlinehome.us/mp3/Orbit.mp3
http://s93744050.onlinehome.us/mp3/CovertOperation.mp3
http://s93744050.onlinehome.us/SchmangeOnline/Maya.mp3
... without any loops....
http://s93744050.onlinehome.us/SchmangeOnline/MayaNoEffects.mp3
The guitars are straight line in and then put through Amplitube.
Everything else is loops, virtual synths and drum machines.
The only time I use the actual studio space is when I'm doing vocals, acoustic guitar or pulling out a drum kit to get some specific drum rolls.
Guess what I'm saying is that you don't need a whole load of crap to do recordings. These days, you can record 128 tracks using just your computer.
It doesn't even have to be the latest greatest thing on the market either...
my G3 is 9 years old and the only update I did was add a G4 CPU and increase the ram to 768mb.

dude, you can record stuff with a wax cylinder, a needle and a yoghurt pot, but Im sure as hell not gona swap !
Kevin Taylor
02-17-2006, 11:24 PM
huh?
maybe my point got lost or whatever but I just wanted to emphasize that these days, all you need is a computer, a mixer and a bunch of VST instruments in order to record stuff.
The only thing you need a studio for is to record vocals, acoustic guitar or any acoustic intruments. You can do an entire album these days just sitting in front of a computer monitor.

I just have a mic set up in front of my amp which goes into my computer. And that's that. It sounds awful, but it's more just so I remember how my songs sound.
Dr_simon
02-18-2006, 03:48 PM
Well no not really. I don't just want to record two tracks at a time...hence the setup !
I want 20+ simultaneous ins at 24/96 for recording bands / orchestras / stage productions with real drum kits and real instruments. If people want to then overdub really detailed stuff like critical vocals then they can come to my place and overdub using the Avalon or the Focusrite with a LDC.
This affords much more flexibility in terms of what I can do. And if I need portability I can pack up the desk and an MOTU interface or two, pick up my mic locker and powerbook and go record outside via firewire !

Nice !!!
What's in the rack ? I can see a power-conditioner and a Peavey something or other !!
PRSplaya

The rack has a furman power conditioner, Peavey Rock Master guitar preamp, and a Behringer Ultra-Curve DEQ2496 EQ. My signal chain is crazy from my guitar to my computer. It goes as follows:
Guitar ---> MXR 6 band EQ pedal ---> Peavey Rock Master ---> PODxt for cab and mic sims only ---> left and right in on DEQ using different EQ curves for each channel ---> left and right out to channel 1 & 2 of Tascam 424 panned hard left and hard right and used to set levels ---> RCA in on soundcard ---> recording a stereo track in Sonar PE 4.
It's a wild chain, but damn does it sound good! I'll e-mail you something I did the other day, so be on the look out for it.

I finally got myself a propper desk for my setup, and finally got moved into my music/studio room. Now all I have left is some straightening up to do, and I have to do something about that horrid green carpet :D

That rigg is just soooo heavenly, i wouldnt know where to start but...(ok id start with the LP....lol)
I use;
Epiphone Les Paul all stock as of yet (a goodie!!)
Casio CTK-650 midi Keyboard
Tascam Porta02 (as a input mixer)
Cubase SX3 (steinberg have finally delivered imo!)
Native Instruments Guitar rigg 2
Halion Sampler keyboard thingy (w/ violin&cello and drum samples)
Edirol HQ Orchestra (awesome)
Absynth 3
Plus tons of free plugins....some are exellent!!
Plus i gotta zoom 3000 multi fx (its crap! so i dont use it for recording, exept for 'live' practicing playing, too much latency on my P.C for live guitar sim's
:(
On my list is a D.I box or maybe a full on Podxt thingy,
and a new amp either a Line6 spider, Vox Valvetronix or a peavey classic 30..

AGREED, I have to laugh, I have seen this type of thread pop up before here, and before I get on my soap box, this is nothing personal about "Dr Simon". Rule one, doesn't matter what you have, its the skill and work that you put into it. Sure sweet pre's, mics, and and nice compressors can help but dont be discouraged if all you have is a computer with Traction or an MBOX. You may have to be more imaginative but you can make great recordings.
I had a commercial Pro Tools HD2 studio, quite a few mics and all kinds of fancy outboard gear, but guess what, when someone doesnt know what they are doing it still sounds like crap. I sold all that stuff 1.5 years ago, I know have a Toneport UX2, Tracktion, Reason and a few mics, since I have some skill I can still make stuff sound really good.
Point to my babbling, dont be intimidated but pictures, just work on your recording knowledge and skills. Matter of fact Dr Simon is a really good source of information.
I would just hate to have people discouraged, recording is a fantastic past time and career.
Peace,
Howard

I'd still kill for Doc Simon's setup wether I knew what to do with it yet or not. I do get by rather nicely with my Roland though.

I still have all the same gear but I got a new desk. I almost bought the same desk PRS has but they were out of them. I ended up with this one and I like it alot.
