OT: Major Slob Advice Needed

So... a month ago when I went back to England and rented out my basement apartment to a college student. I get back a few days ago, and just about freak at the disgusting mess left behind. I charged a cleaning deposit of $500 to clean the place up cause when I left, it was totally spotless .... like new carpet... dusted, showroom quality etc.. Even the fireplace was cleaned out and sweeped.
Anyways... this is what I came home to. There was even a gutar string broken so I know somebody used it.
Now he's saying I'm trying to rip him off for charging for the cleaning deposit.

I didn't even make it thru all the pics. Hell yeah charge him. You could have given him the option of recooping some of the deposit by doing it himself. Other than that you should have no problem in court with those pics.

I started cleaning up behind the counter and there's little slugs on the carpet and moths flying up over all the place.
I set a beer down in a glass and when I went back to drink it there were two fruit flies slitting in it.
there's little flies everywhere.... gawd......... I'm dry heaving just cleaning this crap up.

If I find a dead mouse i'm gonna heave big time.

That's getting a little too personal for my liking. I would be serving this guy a size 13 if it were my pad and then make him clean it up and pay the 500 bucks. Sure, the average male uni student is more than a little sloppy, but the average human being couldn't bear to let their place of habitation get so filthy.

I would tell him he has to pay up. Give him very little time to pay, then take it to court when he doesn't. There's a damn fine chance you'll win with them pics. He'll have to pay court costs too, right? That'd teach him. I wouldn't threaten him or beat him up because if you DO take it to court it'll come back to haunt you.

well, definately charge him the $500.. at least. but I would probably go to him and tell him he's got 3 options
1: clean the place himself, including hiring an exterminator, carpet cleaner, and whatever else needs to be done.
2: pay the $500 (which seems such a little charge for such a big mess)
3: take it up in court, and try to plead to the judge about why you don't need to pay $500 when you literally would have had to been purposely trashing the place to get it to look like that.

don't hate all college students for this though, we aren't all that irresponsible :o

If it goes over $500 I'm taking him to small claims court.
There's stains on the carpet that won't come out... little black bugs living under the dirt in the kitchen area, moths flying around and little fruit flies all over the place. One of the cupboards smells like something died in there.

What the hell kind of mental defective does somebody have to be to live like that man??
He even pulled the TV and couch into the middle of the room so he could lie down and watch it close up and there's stains on the couch where he was lying down to eat.

A few years back my dad ran into the same problem, but it was with 2 small apartments, but the killer is that living in one of the apartments was a man, wife, and sons. The wife had aids and there were literaly buckets of puke everywhere. My dad asked me and my brothers if we would help clean it up, I said hell no, you better hire someone. People like that really disgust me, I think you should give back the money, tell him your gonna hire a cleaner/exterminator and that you'll either be re-embersed fully for the bills or you will take it to court.
