Good day, ladies and gentlemen, we welcome you aboard our tour bus. As we travel you will have the luxury of seeing many landmarks in one short ride. On the left you will notice our geyser of sympathy and compassion which we call "Akira." Akira is reknowned for gushing forth a supernatural amount of concern in any situation that results in someone being put off.

Hold my purse, I'm going to take a picture.

I like to call it.....F# F# F# F# E B. Alls I know is that Sonic Youth uses it a lot, so that's good enough for me.

Ok, so my A string snapped. Big deal. I was meaning to change them anyway. I put on the new strings. No biggie. Gave me something to do. I was stretching the strings after they were on. The A string snapped. I can't type the word that exploded from my mouth, as it's against forum rules. I went into my dad's little drawer full of really old used strings he should have thrown out decades ago. These strings sit in there amongst the harmonicas which are rusted and smell of dad's smoky breath.

Now my A string is nasty. It smells like rusting string combined with smoker's breath, which is really exactly what it is.

Like I said, playing Sonic Youth songs. Little else.

By the way, is it possible to buy single strings, or do you have to buy a pack at a time? That A string I put on is super nasty and I don't really want to buy another pack, because the rest of the strings are fine.

No idea. My strings snap when I'm tuning them down way more than when I'm tuning up, which as far as I'm concerned, defies the laws of physics.

Hmm, I am totally befuddled. And no, I've never seen strings for sale individually. Best to restring all at once regardless.

I just changed mine last night, you can have my old A string. It's not new, but it's probably in better condition than the one on there now.

yeah, you can buy one string at a time.. at my local shop, they charge like $1 per string.. I've had to do it a few times when I break my little E string. you'll have to check your local shop and ask if they sell individual strings. if they don't and you do buy 6 new strings, just put on the one that's broken, and keep the other 5 as backups. rather then taking off 5 perfectly good strings.

yeah, I haven't broken any strings in quite a while, the most I usually tune down has been to drop D, at least recently, I used to go to Db, or sometimes C, but I decided it's not necessary to drop tune in order to get some heavy-sounding metal riffs.

I'll snap a B every 6 months or so on a bend. Pretty common I think.

Ive gotta restring probably once every 2 months or so. I do a lot of big bends, Im on the wammy bar sometimes, and my hands sweat like a biotch so the strings will rust on me.

Well, yeah, you can look at it like that, but down tuning is essentially the same thing as a capo, only in the other direction. You're just changing the key of the song. Yeah, you get a deeper tone out of the deal as a side effect. Of course the whole down tuning for different keys is kind of voided out if you don't really experiment with other down tunings as well. Currently my Strat is tuned 1 step down. I usually play in standard E regardless though. Of all the serious projects I've got going on right now, only one of them uses standard E at that.

I've broken a string on the way down to. Always a suprise when that happens.

Blues_Man
02-14-2006, 05:04 PM
I think the problem with the string snapping when tuning down, is that you keep under tension so long in standard tuning, tuning it down would dramatically remove the stress and tension on the string causing it to break. I also working on a new theory...E=Mc3 (this is new)... :D

I found a brand new acoustic D string that had an almost identical gauge to the A that snapped. I took off the gross A string that was on there. Then I tuned it down to F# F# F# F# E B. Then I played it. Then I smiled. The end.

let's hope you don't snap anything when you retune to standard!

you know what would be cool? playing in F# F# F# F# F# F# cause.. like.. you would have all the same note.. so like, I would make a single string riff, play it over and over, then add a second string, keep it goin, add a third string, etc. until you are playing the riff by just barring all 6 strings.. it would be fun for a few minutes, but then I'd get bored of course..

Yes... that would be... pointless.

Last time I snapped a string was a few weeks ago, snapped my A. I was recording whilst it snapped, the recording sounds really funny.

I've done that before... well... not with F# in particular, but all strings tuned to E I think it was. It wasn't overly exciting. I did, however, enjoy an experience playing in B, F#, B, F#, B, F#.

I've had my guitar tuned to CGDGCD for about 3 or 4 days now. Today I decided to put it back to standard. Then my high-E snapped, which boggles my mind more than breaking a string when tuning down. At least when I'm tuning down, it's usually down a whole bunch of steps. From D to E is only two! How? How could it bloody happen?!

Right now I'm making a list of all the string gauges for Ernie Ball strings. This way, when a string breaks, I can just look at the list and know the gauge I'll need for a replacement string, rather than rummaging through the trash, looking for the packet.

perhaps they only last for a decent amount of time if you stay in standard, cause when I used ernie balls, I jumped around alot.

hmm... yeah im with Akira. i use the extra slinky ernies and i never have had problems. i broke a string once, and that was in some crazy legato or something. all the other times with earnies the only reason ive had to change em is cuz theyre too old...

same with d'atirros. (sp?)
