View Full Version : So who wants one of these?

Maybe I could have been Van Halen if I'd had one of these (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4694482.stm) when I was younger :D

Seriously though, is it a good or bad thing for us? Will we get less kids taking up the guitar when all they want to do is pose in front of their mirrors or will it encourage them to learn properly?

Cheers

I imagine that sooner or later someone'll come along with them and make some video of them doing something relatively impressive involving the gloves that ends up on ebaum's world.

u gota admit tho it would be fun for people who cant play, however they should go out n get a guitar n learn to play if they can afford that

I reckon it stinks. Call me a luddite, but strapping on a pair of electronic gloves and waggling your fingers about is no way to learn an instrument.

I don't really think that it will deminish the amount of people that will want to learn how to play guitar... The reason is because I picked up a new video game called Guitar Hero... don't know how many people have played it... but its for Playstation 2. I bought it the day it came out because me and my buddy were pretty psyched about it when we heard it was coming out. Well... it comes with a controller that is shaped like a miniature SG... and it has 5 colored buttons on the fretboard that you press down in time with the song thats playing on the screen... Well everyone that I knwo that has played this gme and was halfway decent at it wants to learn how to play real guitar now... because they're more interested in the instrument than they were before they started playing the game...

check the game out at www.guitarherogame.com

its pretty fun to sit around with friends and play...

Yes, it IS fun to sit around with friends and play. Guitars.

Maybe it COULD help people get into the instrument more, but honestly I think that thing is just a gimmicky pile of crap that they hope they can sell to people who don't know anything about guitars, which will do nothing to help them play a guitar or do much of anything except look like an idiot.

Akira nailed this one. Pile 'o crap. However it is the first step in this kind of madness. Imagine in 30 years. There will come a time when effort is hardly relevent when making music.

That's what I'm scared of. It seems we live in a culture where the easy alternative is always the most favoured route.

Yeah, but you have to question whether any of them will stick at it (if they ever picked the guitar up). Once they realise that it's alot harder than in some game, I bet they'll quickly put it back down.

Well, I have seen air-guitar contests...

I see this as being an in-bred cousin of those glorified karaoke contests, American Idol, Canadian Idol etc.

I doubt that many people would actually buy one of their own for home use, but as an arcade game, I think it would catch on well. Even leading to 'new, improved' versions of those air-guitar contests. I don't think it would lead to a lot of people taking up guitar in any serious way, since the whole point of the thing is lookin' flash, not sounding amazing.

Yeah, people are working too hard to idiot-proof everything. The less effort anyone has to exert, the better. I guess the ones that are still willing to put forth that much more will still shine through, though.

Blimey, this hit a nerve ;)

Personally I think it looks great. When developed it looks like it will take a deal of skill to get anything decent out of it. It's not a guitar but then again neither is a Theremin (also played by moving the hands and not fingering "real" notes) but that doesn't diminish the intrinsic worth of the technology.

I prefer to look at it as a new instrument. Put aside preconceptions of a guitar and view it as a new form of expression.

I don't think it'll either encourage or discourage would be players but it looks damn good fun and knowing how cheap technology becomes I expect an affordable fully working version in a year or two. Might even get one myself :D

Cheers

Maybe in the future it could possibly branch into something new, but in its current state it's probably not going to hold up. It's built to mimic a guitar in specific. Thus it's turning a tried and true, genuine, musical instrument into a party favor.

the thing about the game is... That some songs on the game are easier for me to play on real guitar than on the game with just 5 buttons... like Cowboys from Hell is way crazy hard on the game, i have beaten it on hard level but not on expert yet...... and Bark at the Moon is insane too. But yeah... whether or not the stick with it IS the question

If we have virtual electric guitars, what's next? Virtual harps? Virtual grand pianos? Virtual french horns? Virtual pipe organs? Are we to have world-class bands and ensembles populated by people who learned to play their instruments on a video game? I'm very sorry if I sound like an art snob here (I probably am :o ), but that scares me a bit...

Back in the "day" about 40 years ago. I had a guitar instructor who at that time was about 62. I might add this gent could play pretty darn well.. ( Some guys have vintage guitars I had vintage guitar instuctors. Darn that guy would be 102 today. I wonder how much I could get for him on Ebay.) He was all in a huff at one lesson about how todays guitarist ( 40 years ago) used electronic gismo's like fuzz boxes and wah wah pedals and how guitarist in his generation had to realy play guitars to make them sound good.. Not just stretch a string and have the electronis do all the effects. I wonder what he would think about the air guitar today.

Well, they're developing a virtual drum kit but I guess that doesn't count as drums aren't really instruments ;)

I did hear that they would like to create a virtual orchestra at some point so you're not too far off the mark

Now what would be really good is a virtual vocalist that could read my lips, work out what notes I should be singing then let me choose the voice. Today I will be Steve Earle :D

do you think some people would try to rip off people by making them look like gods by putting a real guitar in their hands but using those gloves to sound amazing?

Do you mean people doing this onstage, or giving these to people to make them believe they can play guitar when they can't?

who else sees this for the future? hilary duff on stage, singing and playing the electronic air guitar.. wow, what a headache that would be..

but seriously, the electronic air guitar may bring about a larger interest in the guitar itself.. alot of people buying real guitars, and then the people who actually can play guitar well *cough*us*cough* will be glorified.. perhaps this could even usher in a new era of music that has wild guitar riffs and solos, you know, stuff that takes talent.. like the 80's rock guitarists. who wouldn't like to see the 80's come back to life (in terms of music) from 2010-2020?

i personally think it would be a ton easier to just play the guitar. you heard how hard it was for that dude to play smoke on the water. and plus, you have to exagerate everything way more to get any sounds.

first of all this sounds like crap... lets let these talentless hacks waste their money on this product. The REAL guitarists who appreciate the art and effort of playing in the first place, shouldnt have to worry about this replacing our beloved guitar. this sounds to me about as important as the furby or some sh*t.

Never underestimate the importance of the Furby. That thing has distracted my bratty little sisters from terrorising me more times than I can count - I owe it a debt of gratitude :D .

But I agree with you - hopefully, this crummy little machine won't cheapen the appeal of the guitar as a serious musical instrument.

No, but you can try my recipe:

1. Cut some onions up, rub them in your eyes. (If you cry, you're a sissy).

2. Cut some more onions up, rub them all over your head.

3. Put your head in a frying pan and fry your head.

4. After you've fried your head, rub onions in all the parts where flesh is hanging off/gone.

5. Eat your own head. (If you cry, you're a sissy).

6. Pre-heat oven to gas-mark 5.

7. Cook yourself.

8. Eat your own body. (If you cry, you're a sissy).
