Stupid brainteaser

I've been trying to figure this stupid thing out all day.

Take 1,000 and add 40 to it.
Now add another 1,000. Now add 30. And another 1,000.
Now add 20. Now add another 1,000. Now add 10.
What's the total?


I keep coming up with 5000, but the answer says "Did you say 5,000? Sorry, that is incorrect. The correct answer is 4,100. (Read the question again...slowly and carefully)"

I don't get it.
There's no way I can come up with 4,100.
Am I missing something?

Perhaps I'll give the answer in white as to not spoil it for any others: :)
You naturally assume the 2nd to last total is 4990 and are adding 10 to make 5000, but in reality the total is only 4,090...which when 10 is added to equals 4100.

Actually it's prolly more like you assume that total is 4900, and when it says to add 10, you think of 100. It's just tricky to visualize that zero sometimes.

The first time I did it it came out to 5000, I was adding it as I read. When I got down to where it said the answer was 4100 . I could see that. Now I can't see how I got 5000....
