Liona Boyd- An amazing classical guitar player.

Liona Boyd - #1, no question. How many guitarists, in any genre, get Eric Clapton to sign on as a sideman for an album? :)

While certainly not amazing classical guitarists, I think both Nina Gordon and Louis Post for Veruca Salt are good as well as the guitarist from Seven Year Bitch.

A couple spring to my mind who stand out well and truly, Bonnie Raitte and Kristen Hersh. Chrisie Hynde aint bad.
I think the band is called Jl9 or somthing, anyway the bass player is a woman and man is she tasty (not in the guitar sense but the bed sense)
Courtny love can't play and is not all that tasty but the slutty look is quite sassy, hell any Hole will do at times.

I've never really heard that much about female guitarists.
As Raskolnikov mentioned, there was Veruca Salt, but I don't remember anything special about their playing. They sure did look good on stage though.

How about:
Bonnie Rait
Melissa Ethridge
The Bangles
Sass Jordan (bass & guitar)
Sue Foley

Are there female guitarists on this forum ???

Veruca Salt didn't have incredible guitar playing, but the are both solid guitarists. What I like about them is the whole picture; the songs, the instrumentation, the vocals (awesome vocals), and overall a generally cool vibe.

I love Joni Mitchell's acoustic guitar playing - she uses some really strange tunings, but also a lot of open E, like on "Big Yellow Taxi" or "Conversation".

Yeah, I definitely agree.
I didn't mean to imply that they weren't a good band or good musicians. They just never did anything that would make a guitarist "run back to the woodshed", so to speak.
What ever happened to them, by the way? Did they break up?

Essentially yes.
Louis Post is still running Veruca Salt, but she's the only original member in the band. Nina Gordon has a solo album out (heard that song "Tonight and the Rest of My Life?"). I have both of those albums, they aren't bad, but they don't have that chemistry that they have together. Really sad, but I still have to wish them both the best. Maybe they'll do better their next time in the studio.

Ani Difranco...love that Ani...

Liona Boyd was mentioned, Sharon Isbn is another classical player certainly worth mentioning.
Somebody who doesn't get mentioned much, but was possibly the finest female jazz player ever is Emily Remler. She was an incredibly talented guitarrist who regretably died at a young age, certainly worth hearing.

Has anyone mentioned Sheryl Crow? She plays guitar, right?

She sure does. I beleive that she has written some stuff for Clapton in the past too.

Ani is awesome, Sheryl Crow annoys me though. So does Allanis Morriset.
Christoph
06-24-2001, 02:57 PM
Yes, Allanis Morriset is quite annoying.
About Sheryl, I don't know if she actually composes anything, but she's still a pretty decent vocalist.

Her voice is what annoys me the most (not just the lyrics). I think of all the female artists to come out at that time and in that sort of genre is Joan Osborn (though not a guitarist to my knoledge). Have any of you heard some of her live stuff? DAMN that woman can sing.
Christoph
06-24-2001, 05:52 PM
Hmmm . . . I'm not real big into the pop culture thing.
Can't say I have any idea who Joan Osbourne is.
But speaking of vocalists, Sarah Brightman is a darn fine one. It amazes me how she can sound like an opera singer one second and then switch a whiney "Britney" sounding voice the next. It certainly gives her songs a unique flavor.

Joan Osborn... "What if God was one of us?"
Remember now?
Anyway, the rest of her stuff I've heard is better.
Christoph

Ohhh . . . ok. So that's Joan Osborne.

No, but Raskolnikov was on the subject of vocalists. I'll try to keep it to guitar players only.
Hey, how about Jewel.

I think chicks take up the violin if they inherit the shredding gene. Violin's cool too but why don't more play guitar?
best female guitarists I've heard of are:
Jennifer batten - Stunning rock guitarist reminiscent of vai and henderson at times but pretty distinctive in her own right.
Galina Vernigora - a stunning classical guitarist who played at a local "arts centre" spot in my home town which really is in the middle of nowhere. Apparently Rak wrote a classical guitar piece and had to wait a few years for someone to play it right.. Galina.

Ida Presti was a classical player that even impressed Segovia, but as to why aren't their any women ( Jenifer Batten is apparently a freak of nature ) who really play Stunner Rock Guitar is a mystery, must be a estrogen vs testosrone thing?

The Great Kat (a woman) is a very in-your-face shredder on both electric guitar and violin. On her web page, she claims to be the best, fastest, coolest, only, etc., so I sent her an e-mail telling her to calm down, and mentioned a couple of guitarists that would kick her ass in terms of speed, and then she threatened to sue me for harassment. She also speaks of herself in third person.
Crazy bitch. But she can shred, I give her that.

Natalie Merchant used to have a female guitar player (lead) in her band who was very good. She played on the Tigerlilly cd, the one that had all the hits on it.

Bonnie Raitt. She can hang with any of the big boy blues/country pickers.
Chrissy Hynde kicked butt as does Nancy Wilson and Sheryl Crow.
But overall? I have to go with Ani Defranco. Besides being a great musician, she is really hot. (yeah I know, shallow...etc but I can't help it.) :D

Rynata (aka The Mistress of Shred) to name one of TONS. I know this thread is like old, but I agree with the person who said The Kat isn't that good. Her playing style reminds me of some of the Vinnie Vincent stuff that I've heard and I don't mean that in a good way.
