Nice snake dude. My buddy had a few snakes back when we were in college. It was always interesting to watch them eat. Especially if we were a little screwy in the head at the time.

I'd read or something some time ago that you're supposed to feed them dead animals since a living one in a contained environment with a predator would provoke the prey to fight back and risk injuries to your pet. I'd also heard that dunking them in stuff like chicken broth makes it better tasting for the snakes as well. I've never owned a snake so don't hold me to any of this.

The snake looks bad ass too, by the way.

On a side note, I used to have a chameleon, but he died a few years ago. I've probably got some pictures of him somewhere, but I doubt they'll surface before this thread dies.

thanks for the replys guys.

cryptic, you are right. AWYALY feed pre killed or frozen/thawed rats. He eats Jumbo rats (the biggest you can get) every 12-14 days. thouse things are huge, and would put up a hell of a fight. but, i have never heard of the chicken broth thing..

Zero, your mom will give in eventually.. lol trust me :D

those are some sweet pets guys.. I could never get a spider or a snake. I'm fricken terrified of spiders for some reason, and the bigger they are, the more I can't stand even looking at them. I don't have a problem with snakes as much, but I can't imagine owning one.

I've got a dog, who just turned one year old on friday.

Sweet snake!

What procedures do you have to go through to keep one of those in good health?

16andlifetogo
02-07-2006, 03:56 PM
thanks guys :)

well, you keep them at a 82 degree F temp on the hot side of the cage, a 78 degree F temp on the other side. fresh water, a hide box, and a rat ever week and a half to two weeks. they are pretty low mantiance.

I also own 2 iguanas.. they on the other hand are hard to care for.

Hey, CW14: What type of spider is Boris?
He's a 'garden orb'. Theyre not deadly, but they'll hurt like hell, swell up and give you nausea for a week :o

I usually can't stand the things but Boris is cool.

Hey 6strngs? That dog half blue heeler and half lab?
well, when we got her, the shelter said she was part lab, and part aussie shepherd.. and then when we took her to the vet, they were like "are you sure?" and pulled out a book and showed us a picture that looked exactly like her. apparently she is a catahoula, which is some really new rare breed from mexico, cattle herding dog. she's so calm and gentle, but as soon as there is a stranger at the door (she particularly hates males, she doesn't usually growl at females) she'll be growling and barking. and if you want to play with her, and she wants to play rough.. well.. I could just show you all the marks on my arms that are from her teeth. but all in all, she's really sweet, and gentle, unless you rile her up.

i used to keep tarantulas...i was a spider freak...i used to sleepwith 9 tarantulas in my room..by far the easiest pets to maintain...they don't stink, only if the food is rotten...even their dung don't stink... u'll probably only need to clean the cages every 6 months or so...and they're so cool..

i really love snakes... i used to catch rattlers along the higway in oregon when i was a kid, and i kept a milksnake and a few garter snakes for awhile. Would love to get another, but yeah the whole live food thing makes me puss out.

I've got the birds and the cat, they're enough for me right now.

hey, I actually went looking for some info on the breed which my dog is, which is a catahoula leopard dog. something to read for those who are interested (http://www.catahoulaleopard.com/homepg.htm) (don't worry, the annoying barking thing at the beginning stops after a few seconds)

here's an excerpt from that site:
Catahoula Leopards are extremely agile and athletic, territorial, protective of "their property". They are more primitive psychologically than most breeds and need consistent obedience reinforcement. The owner must understand the Alpha concept and stay in control at all times, but still be loving to the dog. Very loyal, loving, intelligent and independent... they really think for themselves
