you guys are wieners. [patronizing sissy voice]"ooh, too spooky" "ooh, too gross." "i heard people die in it!"[/patronizing sissy voice]
seriously though...
nah, i like movies that are sick, twisted, gruesome, sadistic and generally vile and unnerving, that get Utah all hot and bothered. I mean let's see here, favorite movies include: A Clockwork Orange, Apocalypse Now (pref. the bloodier and more drugged-out redux), Suicide Club (aka Jiatsu Circle), Battle Royale, Sexy Beast, The Salton Sea, Hamburger Hill, American Psycho, Platoon, Elephant, etc.
Thank you, my life is enough like a Mentos commercial as it is, and I have enough sweet romance crap to make it like She's The One... so... I prefer to throw some BLOOD, MISERY, and HUMAN SUFFERING and UNADULTERATED SADISM into the mix.

I'm not bothered by any amount of gore or violence, but I don't see any point in watching a violent movie just for the sake of violence. If there's no respectable character or plot development in a movie (or even a few awesome action scenes) I don't consider it worth my time.
I have a suspicion that the more physical pain someone has actually felt the less likely they are to be bothered by watching other people get messed up.

just so everyone knows, i'm not being 100% serious... yeah those are my favorite flicks right there, but i'm not just into violence for the spectacle of it. films like Suicide Club use ridiculous amounts of fake blood juxtaposed with cute japanese schoolgirls and gut-cringingly frank descriptions as one of the integral parts of the film: societal trivialisation of death.
i've skipped out on a lot of films that have lots of violence because that's all they're rumored to have... i'm not a big fan of action films.
but that's besides the point... i won't not go see a movie simply because it's got huge levels of violence in it. i actually have been meaning to see hostel... maybe i will go and write a review of it on yahoo afterwards :D

I saw it the other day. There are like 4 parts that are somewhat gorey, but I definetly recommend waiting until it comes out because it sucks! The acting is terrible..for example..thsi guy gets 2 fingers cut off and hes walking around like its just another day in life. Its dumb.

Random trivia- if you lose a couple fingers quickly and don't see it happen you might not even notice it because of the shock. I severely doubt it's possible with a knife, but there have been cases of men losing an entire hand to a .50BMG slug without realizing it.

also, the shock/adrenaline rush from severe injuries can do amazing things... I broke my knee freshman year of high school in the 3rd period, walked around on it all day, and didn't even go to the doctor for another two days because while it hurt a bit, it didn't hurt that much... turned out that the impact was a really bizarre one and that one of the ligaments in my knees yoinked out a large piece of bone that had since made its way into the area between my knees. It was kind of funny hearing the doctor tell me how much it hurt... cause to be honest... it didn't much more than your knee would if you bumped it real bad.

plus, if someone chopped off two of my fingers, yeah it'd hurt like hell, but, i'd still do everything i could to make them hurt substantially more. i'd cry over the fact it would be very difficult for me to play guitar and possibly draw when i was certain my life was no longer in danger.

what do you guys think about SAW/II
6strngs_2hmbkrs
01-27-2006, 10:58 PM
I'm with pony, I love horror films, and films that are just downright twisted. of course, there has to be a plot to it, otherwise it's boring, but I've got no problems seeing peoples eyes fall out of their sockets, and then having them pick it up and squeeze it so all the juices explode everywhere... yeah, I'm a sick twisted freak. so what?
btw, haven't seen saw II, but saw the first one (most of it.. I fell asleep for like 20 minutes of it) it was a pretty good movie, good plot to it. overall pretty good. nothing amazing, but still pretty good.
I like movies like the butterfly effect (despite having ashton kutcher play the main character.. eww..) and the jacket. movies where you are like "wtf is going on?" and then at the end you finally understand and go "ohhhh!"
the ring one and two were some pretty good movies, the exorcism of emily rose was pretty good, but could have been better if it wasn't based on a true story, then they could have put in a better ending... for example: everyone dies!
I saw the devil's rejects, and wow, rob zombie is a sick twisted freak! which is totally awesome! alot of the blood was digital, and the acting was mediocre.. but some of the ideas and images in the movie were downright disturbing! which is why I liked the movie.
I can't think of any others I've seen recently, but I'm sure there are some. I do plan on seeing hostel. perhaps take a girl to go see it with me (horror movies are best for first dates.. cause then they get scared.. and then you reach over and hold their hand. yeah, good stuff.)
oh yeah, anybody seen crywolf? was it any good?

yeah eric, that guy in that review... man, i hope that's a sick joke. and if it isn't i hope that there's a large multi-vehicle accident in his future.
i guess the things with movies is that it's escapism. you watch a film to find yourself in another world. to me, maybe that's what's so engrossing about a film like Clockwork Orange, which is a different era's interpretation of what another era would be like, and it puts you in the shoes of someone whom you are not. it's hard to relate to Little Alex, whose wanton violence seems to have no real substance behind it, whose spite and contempt and hatred is rooted in the world that allowed him to become whom he is... much like Patrick Bateman in American Psycho, who during dinner conversation with other yuppies at an expensive restaurant will just randomly interject details of his last gruesome exploit to discover that no one around him cares; they rarely are listening, and when they are, they just laugh and start talking about Armani.
if the violence in the movie is integral to the plot i find that, as one of the most fundamentally abhorrent things in human nature, it can be the most moving. for instance, the scene in Donnie Darko toward the end, when he shoots Frank in the face out of spite; the movie up until that point was not violent, at least, one would not have categorized it as a violent movie. but as far as i am concerned, after that point, it has always sat in me as a "violent" movie. because the violence is so stark; his girlfriend is killed accidentally, indeed, her death is really Donnie's fault indirectly as he was the one who put the letter in Grandma Death's mailbox and she is reading it right then; the Trans Am swerves to miss and hits Gretchen instead. before he pulls the trigger, his face is full of spite and hatred; there's a blunt, mechanical sound as the gun shoots and recoils, and Frank falls dead.
In sexy beast, it is really hard to feel badly for Ben Kingsley's character when he's being mercilessly slaughtered; he's ruined the lives of all the characters, he's a complete sociopath, and he got what was coming to him. the director, Jonathan Glazer, uses excessively bright visuals throughout the whole movie; the skies, the speedos, the cars, the house... everything is bright, shiny, cheery in Spain, and thus, the long, bloody, prolonged murder of the most despicable character of the film is all the more vivid.
in Suicide Club, the violence is over the top, cartoonish; the opening scene where all the schoolgirls jump in front of the train is so literally awash in blood and gore, yes, it would make some people probably get violently ill. and some of the later descriptions of the accident; the mortician noting that the subway train overshot the station because of all the "human grease" on the tracks, that they were "pretty sure there were 54 bodies, but they were still prying them apart" is so eeeeeeuuuuuu that it's amusing. but then as the film progresses and gets deeper, the movie turns out to be substantially deeper: it is not a big bloody nasty spectacle, it is a commentary on modern society and how people lose touch with who they are, and their sense of longing for identity leads them to follow the flock and the status quo, to the point that they will kill themselves, remove their lives simply because they're part of a club that agrees to commit suicide (as the film progresses you discover that the people who commit the planned mass suicides sign a pact on the internet, though there is nothing given other than their word... thus it is just them finally getting to be a part of something big).
so that's why i like these films... because the violence in it leads to a larger implication.

I haven't seen Hostel. It's rare that I go and see movies, it seems that nearly all of the new movies we get here are built purely on action and which ones got the best visuals. As a result it seems that a majority of people can't seem to comprehend a film that actually has a plot. Man, I hate my society.

****Standard Spoiler Warning - If you are going to see the movie and haven't already... quit reading****
I've seen Saw I, Saw II and Hostel. I've also seen many of the old Italian gore flicks which are the best if you're into gore. I'm not a gore fan myself, but I'm glad someone is finally doing away with fake injruy effects. If you're going to show a guy getting shot, make it look real. Anyways, Hostel was a two part movie 1st part is soft-core porn. 2nd part is gore. If you like either one, go see the movie because there's lots to be seen. No one in the theatre I was at puked, passed out or went psychotic. So I think that one women who did pass out probably was either hypoglycemic (sp?) or had forgotten to take her medication. Hostel starts off with a bunch of guys slumming it around Europe looking for sex. They stay in Hostels (thus the title) and have fun getting drunk and upsetting the locals. It takes a good while before there is actually any violence. Although when you finally do see it, it's original. The one guy out of the group of 3 gets taken to someplace. You don't get to see where he goes, but suddenly he's sitting in a dungeonous place like Saw I only more industrial. He's bound to a chair with a big collection of sharp objects around him. The guy that's come into the room wearing something like a guy handling sulfuric acid would wear, or maybe if he was slaughtering cows all day, that kind of outfit. So he picks up stuff and the guy is shaking and pisses himself. The madman picks up a drill and it's the first thing he uses on the guy! They go straight for the femur so to speak on this one. I won't say where the guy uses the drill but it's pretty much anywhere but what you'd expect. Then the guy is screaming for him to let him go and the guy says ok. But first he takes out a knife and cuts the guys achilles tendons. Nice way to go huh, then the guy trys to get up and walk!!!!! and of course his foot starts pulling away from his leg.... So in brief the rest of the movie goes along as each of the three guys gets pulled into the same place except for the last guy who escapes. This movie isn't scary so much as it is interesting. If you can get past the gore, there's some interesting thought process going on here from the writer and director. For those of you who got to see Saw I or II and wanted the bad guy to get it in the end, well Hostel takes the "bad guys" and annihlates them. It's almost funny at times.

Personaly I think most movies nowadays stink, hardcore. There is enough foreshadowing in them you can't be scared. At least for me anyway. I think the problem comes from watching scary movies as a kid. I think Jaws was one of the scariest movies I've watched but then again I was only 8 or so the first time I saw it so it had a big impact on my little mind. Watch Jaws now and you think, man how lame, that shark is soooo fake. The point I'm getting at is now I'm 31, and it's harder to be scarred. There isn't really anything that surprises me in movies anymore. The last movie I watched was House Of Wax. It was a decent film but the ending stunk.

I saw Hostel the night it came out... and needless to say I was dissappointed. I went in expecting there to be all these scenes of people torturing people and there being such a large amount of blood and gore that it would make out to be a decent horror flick... It reminded me a lot of Saw 1 and 2 because both of them seemed like they were going to be scary but they ended up being more of a thriller than horror movie. I'm not going to give away anything about the movie... but if you pay attention to the trailers you already know whats going to happen anyway... The first 30-40 minutes of the movie is nothing but 3 guys partying... there is no violence whatsoever in the first half of the movie... and its a short movie at that... There are only 2 or 3 scenes of torture throughout the movie... but there are some pretty sweet deaths in the final sequence of the film... I would reccommend it to anyone who liked saw 1 and 2... and to anyone that wants to see a movie but doesn't want to watch what is currently out... otherwise don't waste the 20 dollars for you and a date... and rent it in two months. I would have to say that the biggest draw to the film was the fact that Tarentino put his stamp of approval on it by co-producing it...

The one with the village and the monsters that come into the village so people can't go into the woods but it turns out that it's a community of people trying to segregate themselves from society and keep their children unaware of the real world outside the wood?

The book was much better than the movie... A movie like that which is centered around a single plot twist tends to lose to the hype... since after people tell other people about it... it gets around and the whole movie is pretty much ruined. I liked it though... I like M. Night Shyamalans work.

I also watched red eye last night. another great movie. in the beginning you're like "is this gonna go somewhere" then in the middle you are like "did it just go somewhere?" then in the end you're like "wow, it went somewhere all right!" this was not a movie that I fell asleep while watching, like I did with the brother's grimm. it has a good way of keeping your attention and keeping the supense throughout the whole movie.
anyone else see that one?
btw, about the village, it wasn't necessarily a scary movie, but it had a good, well-thought-out plot which took me by complete surprise. I saw it in theaters only a little after it came out, so I never had people tell me the ending and ruin it for me.

one time, i was at some movie (don't remember which) where there was some retard who'd been laughing at inopportune moments... and it was this loud, nasally, honking laugh... the movie was somewhat dramatic, and at the part leading up to one of the more dramatic scenese, they bust out laughing, and the entire theatre went "shh!"
They stopped for a little while then bust out laughing again, so I just turned and yelled "SHUT UP!" really loudly; the laughing stopped abruptly and the theatre stared clapping and there were a few "woo!" sounds. i heard a few people get up and leave a moment later :D I hate retards in theatres.
in Santa Monica, which is part of the greater LA sprawl, it's a really expensive fancy pants community by the beach (just north of me, and where i work), one of the theatres has a special "mom" showing midday where they play kid movies and sappy romances, and it's specficially geared towards wealthy stay-at-home moms so that they can bring their babies and toddlers who can cry, babble, etc without disturbing other patrons. how cool is that?

I'M THE MANLIEST!" and then i peed on the both of them and drove back home in my Camaro.
true story.
wtf? dude. that doesn't sound like you at all! are you high right now?

Holy havn't logged in for a while!
Yeah, pony roundhouses blind jerks.(we all know ponyones story is bogus too....he would never drive a camaro). That actually sounds like something maddox would write.
Ive never seen a commercial blockbuster or even a lesser know horror flick to be disturbing.People are just too sheltered nowadays. If anyone is really curious to what there mental limits are on gore....well,search it out on google(NO,not faces of death).
Even video has its limits on how far it can dust your civilized mind off.Bloody, gorey and heartless wars, invasions and attacks were common before projectiles were used to cut people down.Whens the last time an army won a battle using blunt swords and spears and then killed all the boys and pregnant woman(so to decimate the race/tribe completely).
Its probably a good thing those days are over... ...put down that sword 6strings!

One time some girls infront of me wouldn't stfu during the movie, so I put my foot up between their heads on the chairs, and started going "Helloooo, I am Mr. Shoe, what is your name?!"
I have no idea what motivated me to do that, but it shut them up atleast.

The look on their faces was priceless.
Remember to do it in a typically overly enthusiastic English accent.

btw that blind guy deserved it and i did too mess that girl up and pee on them and drive off in a Camaro. I'm totally like that. I like beating up on people. It's to offset my vegetarianism.

hey, I watched hostel last night because it just came out on DVD on tuesday. wow... that's all I can say.. it was one of the better horror movies I've seen. the first 45 minutes are so is pretty much porn (and who doesn't like topless european chicks?) and after that, it's one of the sickest, goriest, grossest movies I've seen.. and it was awesome! seriously though, I almost threw up while watching parts of it. seriously, this movie is not for the weak-stomached.
