70's styling

I'm a bass player who dabbles in guitar playing, so please excuse my ignorance of the instrument. I'm playing around with some home recording equipment and have put together a song that reminds me of TV themes from the 70's that I'd like to add a retro guitar part in the background. I'm not sure how to get a good muted quality like they had on songs like the Shaft Theme, Love Theme, et al. Any suggestions?

Maybe this will help: Try pinching the pick way up near where you pick the strings. Try to have your fingers touch the strings right after you pick. I don't really know how to explain it better than that, i hope it helps.
